Satin or comp blades... which sheath to protect finish

I have seen way too may countless knives that have never been used yet have marks all over from the sheath... its a shame that such awesome knives get scratched up before ever being used, and putting a scratched up knife on display is less than ideal.

So for those blades that look too pretty to use, yet you still want to sheath them, what is recommended to keep the finish as pristine as possible?

leather, kydex, nylon?...Any info appreciated

A soft leather sheath would work best I reckon. Just be sure there are no little specs of dirt etc. on the blade before sheathing the blade, as this is usually the cause of scratches on shiny new blades.

Comp finish blades aren't supposed to be pretty. That's what makes them beautiful... ;)

If the looks of your satin finish on a display only knife are that important to you, then you may find no sheath to be the best option. One little grain of dirt/dust is all it takes to ruin a satin finish, and every time the blade is inserted & removed increases the chance for it to happen. Friction is a permanent force of physics... so best not to play with it if looks matter so much. Competition finish doesn't show scratches nearly as easily and makes a much better choice if a sheath is required for display.

I always go with leather for my satin knives. Just be sure the blade is clean before sheathing it.

Leather, especially well made leather lined with soft leather will keep the knife looking newer longer. But even doeskin lined leather will scratch the satin if a piece of dirt or grit or pixie dust gets inside.

why would you want to display a knife with a sheath on it.......or a sheath with a knife in it?

I would not want to display it in its sheath, and I do not even use any blades im worried about scratching, but sometimes I just want a few nice accessories to go with the knives ....but not at expense of the knife itself....

All very good advice
