I recently went camping and cleanly snapped my cold steel trail master (sk5 steel) in half while batoning though a 5 inch log. I had only used this knife for 9 camping trips in the last 3 years and was dissapointed due to if still being a fairly new knife. Im still awaiting cold steels customer service to finish investigating my knife that i sent them to see if they will replace it. I have now decided to buy a busse combat battle misstress from busse combat because i hear the are among the best if not the best heavy duty blades out there and i seen the torture test on youtube which backs up this claim. My question to you guys is do i pay the extra $200 for the satin finish even though i plan to beat this knife up chopping and mostly batoning with it or do i save the $200 and get the regular finish on it. Its definitely not gonna be a show piece. I just dont know what i gain with the satin finish besides a better looking blade. I hear its easier to clean up and sharpen but thats all i have heard. Is it worth the extra $200 for what i am gonna do with it? Please tell me what you think and inform me more on satin finish and its pros and cons. Thanks .

Save a bit more and get a Rodent 9! :) Same awesome Bussekin heat treat at a bargain price.

Coated vs Uncoated. A chopper is going to get beat upon, might as well save a buck.

As Leatherman said, whatever you go for get the coated blade. The coating will smoothen out with use, might cause some drag at the beginning but that should be taken care of in one or two trips out.
Satin obviously looks prettier, will have less resistance while chopping/batonning, but coating won't be really that much of an issue. After some of the coating wears off you can always strip the blade and polish it some.
Your other option is to go with the Double Cut finish (bead blasting with two different mediums) for half the price of satin.

Corey I would say if you are going to beat on the blade, go with coated. Like elof said the coating will wear. The added bonus of coating is that it gives some corrosion protection.

I have to be that guy and ask... Why not just get a $20 folding saw or hatchet instead?

Because this is the Swamp Rat knives forum and the fellow was asking about a Bussekin knife. :)

Now for your question, honestly, sawing is not as fun as chopping and a big knife is simply a hoot to chop with versus a hatchet. My poor little hatchet has been gathering dust since I found the Swamp when they opened their doors.

Ah, the 20 dollar cutting tool. We've all bought them, we've all broken them. When they come out with a 20 dollar cutting tool that can handle what a Busse / Kin can handle and shrug it off, I'll be the first in line...

Perfect example my friend.

Its not "common" per say, but its heard of a little more often than usual for a hard use blade. I worked a sheath around a Trail Master a little bit back that had been through a few tours overseas in conditions and use that I'd not wish on an enemy (maybe my worst, but not a common enemy :p ) It survived very admirably. The fellow said it had done things that he was sure would have been the end of that knife and it shrugged it off.

I am a big fan of the older Trail Masters, say 80's and 90's, one of their stag handled models is one of my grails. :)

I was just in the same boat, so here's my opinion (I went with satin). If you're only going to get one BM and you feel like you want satin, just bite the bullet and go for it. While the Busse motto is "No Regrets", you will always wish you had.
