Just got done working on these. Just got the user BM-E recently on the exchange with a clip point that was put on by Siegle. He also put a symetrical edge on it. As a result the edge profile got thicker. I decided to grind it down to thin it out and put a satin finish on it.

It came out ok so I decided to do the same to my SH Lean Mean Street. The Lean Mean is almost down to zero edge but not quite there yet. I will put a very thin convex on it later.

Ouch! That BMe looks like a real pig sticker! Nice job bro...looking forward to seeing both of those sometime in the future! ;)

Man, those look great!

If you get a chance, it would be cool to see some closer shots of the finish on that BM-e. How far did you take it (to what grit paper?)

OMG... that BM looks freakin awesome!! Very nice:thumbup:

Thanks guys! It took quite a bit of time on the grinder because I had to worry about the temper. It was definately worthwhile and a good learning experience. I am still trying to figure a better way to put those handle rivets back nicely and evenly. It took me a few tries to get it back on the Lean Mean.

gimmejr,
Yes the spines are also polished and their edges radiused.

The BM-E was taken to 800 grit and the Lean Mean was taken to 320 grit. I prefer the more satin finish look of the 320grit but the 800grit is smoother and cleans easier.

I have some other angle shots of the BM-E and Lean Mean but am having problems getting to imageshack right now. I think I am just gonna get a gold membership to post my pics.

Ok I was finally able to get my pics up. I don't know why but Imageshack is very finicky sometimes. But what the heck it is free so I can't complain.

I used a belt grinder and started off at 80, 120, 320, then 800. Using a wheel would end up giving the knives a hollow grind. I used the platen on my cheap grizzly belt grinder to keep it as flat as possible. It is not perfect but good enough for me. When it gets all scratched up from use I just run it over again with the 320 or 800 and brand spankin new again ;)

thatmguy,

I honestly don't really know.

Let me tell you the rest of the story... During that time there was some guy (Sorry can't remember the name) at Busse that I was taking orders. I want to say somewhere around 1998 but I can't remember for sure. Anyway, I wanted to buy a NO-E and also ordered 2 lean means or something to that effect. I was chatting with the person on the phone and told him that I had a SHBA with the slotted bolts. He flipped and got all excited and asked me if I wanted to trade it. I said sure why not because I have never even used it. He gets even more excited when he hears that.

So he makes me this great deal and says that he will send me the NO-E if I sent him my slotted SHBA. Now I was thinking what a great deal because hell I never use the badger and can get a new knife that I wanted. So we made the trade and I asked him as a favor to not coat my Tan Lean Mean and also leave it unsharpened because I wanted to sharpen it myself. That particular knife came to me with a standard bead blast that is much more coarse than the current DC finish.

Nowadays I realize that the trade wasn't such a great deal :grumpy: hahaha.... But it is all good because it sure felt like a great deal a long long time ago :) At that time we were both happy with what we got so I won't complain. If I could have seen the future back then I would have snagged up all of the SHSH's and SHBM's. But stupid me only managed to buy a SHSH for $259 back in those days.

I am curious if that person that I traded with is still around. Most likely some big shot at Busse by now.
