Satin vs. Black finish

Can I ask your preference on Satin vs. Black finish?

I have a mini cqc-7 in black and really like it. Seems very durable...no scratches yet...just light use so far.

I had a cqc-13 in Satin finish that had a small blemish on it, so the satin finish flaked off easily on some of the blade. I returned it and now have the option of Black or Satin again.

Any reason not to get Satin?
Is it just as durable as the black?

The Satin finish on my 13 looked kinda cheap...wasn't what I expected.

I did like how it stood out from the black handle though, but just didn't do it fo me.

Please tell me your experience, thanks.

How does a satin finish flake off?
Not sure, there was a small bubble, brand new knife.

I scratched it with my fingernail, came right off. I returned to dealer I bought it from and am doing an exchange for another knife.

The blade was from 2005, according to stamp on knife, not sure if that mattered or not.

Still want an emerson though, maybe just a small defect. Rest of knife was perfect.

It was just a small portion of the blade, like size of a pea.

What I understand is, the satins will now be stone-washed.
Cool, if you had to pick, old satin finish vs. black, which would you pick? I'm purchasing this week, so can't wait. The new stone-washed looks nice though.

I have a few black blades and quite a few satin blades.
I personaly find the satin coating last longer than the black and im not a big fan of tacticool black blades any way so do prefer the look of the satin as well.
Having said that one of my favorite EKIs of all time, the Persian, only comes in black so I had no choice but still love it.
Some knives can be harder to find in satin than black, I dont know if thats because they make less of them or they are more popular so sell out faster.

Im not a big fan of the stonewash either, I like a belt satin finish my self but stone wash probably still looks better than a coating.

Given the choice it would be satin over black every time

eki's satin isn't a ground satin finish. it is a coating.

im also not a big fan of a stonewash finish, but i like the idea of a "bare" blade.

my emerson's are all coated black, except for a 1999 cqc7.

mori is correct its a coating.

as far as looks go, i like the way the black ones look the best but i dont like the scuffing, so i usually go with the "satin", i would prefer bead blast, or would love to have a real satin finish like the customs and semi's, but i am not gonna hold my breath. imho the "satin" finish does hold up well, and while it will scuff it wont scuff easily.

stone wash would also be an improvement in looks, though i have seen some funky looking SW finishes too.

Coatings??
I strip them.
You can't beat bare 154-CM...
or any other steel, imo.

You can use a paint stripper. I used green scrubbies and WD-40.
I don't know if stripping voids the warranty or not. Check with EKI.

I would expect anything more than sharpening or taking the knife apart for cleaning will void the warranty.

Haze.....you're......nekkid!!! Where did your platinum title go?

As for the coating, I think the "satin" finish is like the black coating, only it's grey instead of black.

if one removes the coating from the entire blade including the pivot area, the tolerances would change.

that may be problematic. i don't know if simply tightening the pivot screw would be the fix.

That's a good point, Mark.
When I stripped my HD blade, I left that area alone.
