I searched the archives and couldn't find any information on the nature of satisaal wood. Does anyone have any knowledge about it? Is it related to any domestic (US) hardwood? I have refinished a few wood khukuri handles, and really like the stuff. It seems ideally suited to the purpose. I guess those guys know what they're doing, huh?

There was a thread on this in the last couple of months. It's a tropical hardwood. Very stable. Used for fine furniture, chess sets, knife handles(!), musical instruments. Raised commercially in SE Asia. Native to hills of northern India and Nepal. Half a dozen common names.

We need a "real" member to search the thread and post a link.

Hi Brian,
Its a Himalayen Padauk of the Pterocarpus specis, I forget which one but if you search for Pterocarpus you should find the last lot of threads on it.

The search function will return in a week.

As I remember, the last thread on this was comprehensive- more than I needed to know by far.
