Saturday morning visit

Had a good Saturday morning visit with a friend today. We agreed to meet at a local Burger King for coffee and conversation. He asked if I could sharpen his knife for him. So, this morning I headed out with stones and strop in hand.
To make a long story short, he had told his buddies I was coming and they brought knives with them also. I did not know other folks were coming. So here I am (47 year old) sitting in a Burger King, sharpening a table full of knives (smallest of which was about a 4" blade)
with several WWII veterans (my friend is 70), listening to their stories and drinking coffee. This was the best time I have had in ages! Each man had a story, each knife and sheath had a story about where and when it was bought, how many deer and small game was dressed with it, and how many times it had been in the woods to help provide food, shelter, fire and good companionship.

I'm not sure how this is W&SS related, other than I learned a lot from these new friends of mine and felt very privileged and honoured to sharpen their woods knives for them. Each man was very thankful to have a sharp knife, and I was blessed by this experience. They invited me back for coffee, as they meet every Saturday morning from 5:30 to 8:30 am. I think I found a good place to fit in. Most people my age don't seem to have the time or patience for good conversation with these older gentlemen.

Best,

Mike

That's just awesome. You must still be grinning from ear to ear.

That is one of those priceless experiences. I am envious, and Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it made my day, and you know what, they were not concerned with the opinions of the "sheeple", to these guys this was completely normal and accepted activity. Wish everyone was like this. We even offered to the manager to sharpen thier kitchen knives, but she said BK does not use knives in the kitchen

That's awesome. I love gaining knowledge from older people. I'm 44 and think we can learn from all ages. Even if it's something we don't want to ever do! (Like get drunk every weekend and puke, like some of my younger co-workers!)

I can relate to that, Revolverman. Some old people are a great company. Even when I was a kid I liked to hang out more with my grandpa' and his friends than with the rascals my age. Are ya kiddin' me, these guys were all war veterans, they traveled Europe from Russia to Hungary and man they could tell war stories! And since I loved guns as much as I do now you can imagine the geezers were demigods to me. Not to mention that they also loved the attention and the awe and used to teach me all sorts off stuff my parents couldn't: fishing, carving, dressing and skinning animals, making fire and so on.

I just hope I can be as helpful to people as these men were to me. Some people seem to grow old and bitter for whatever reason, I plan to remain as friendly and courteous as I can.

sound like a great time. we have a groups of gents at some of the coffee shops know as the O.F.C. old farts club. love to sit and talk with the boys.
