I bought a Savage rifle Saturday. One of the papers in the box was Savage Arms knives. I believe it said 440J2 steel. Anyone own one yet?

I like this one.....

As a rule, it's generally ill-advised to buy a knife from a gun maker. They're usually cheap Chinese pieces of junk that are relying on the gun maker's good name to con a bunch of chumps. It's very likely 420J2 steel, which is more or less the bottom of the barrel as far as knife steels are concerned. If you think the knife is cool or whatever there's nothing stopping you from buying it, but you'd be much better off saving your money and buying something from a reputable knife manufacturer.

I know I'll probably get stoned to death for this, but.... I try to buy American made blades and or other quality blades. However I have found some pretty nice Chinese knives at budget prices. I've got at least one among my favorite knives that I bought very inexpensively but found it to be an excellent knife (I went back and got 2 more).

But I don't have a Savage...

HK by Benchmade is at least one exception to your rule.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the topic at hand....but, anyhoo....I think stu nailed it.

That said, if one is looking for a saw back, gut hook, serrated knife that comes with a screwdriver bit, then that's the knife!

I too tend to stay away from knives made by gun makers, as far as benchmade's h&k line some are USA made , but most are made in China, It's funny h&K has it's one line of knives now, but the original H&K knife was an emerson cqc-10. The exception to that rule would be wilson combat IMO,they have Chris reeve build some of their knives and I've heard nothing but good things about their other knife not sure about the name but it's not made by Chris Reeve.
