This peaked my interest slightly until I saw the price ($415). I might still consider it for future purchase and wanted to know if anyone has had good experience with this. I currently hunt with a shotgun, air rifle, or a .22 when hunting small game such as fox, coons, and anything smaller than that like rabbit and squirrel that I mentioned in a previous thread. I usually leave the firearms I am not using in the vehicle and take just one with me into the field. I was squirrel hunting with my shotgun and I had a shot at a squirrel, but it was out of range. If I had the .22 then I could of taken it. I like having the shotgun for shooting up into trees so I am not responsible for a stray .22 bullet. This Savage 42 seems to give you best of both worlds, but the price seems a little steep. Does anyone have any recommendations or a brief review of this firearm. I feel like it would be a great small game hunter. The option of taking the shotgun and a .22 sidearm is something I have not done in the past but have always planned on it. I just would prefer to use a .22 revolver which I do not have at the moment.

I had the opportunity to handle one at a chain store. It is light weight and handled well for me. The price was high IMO (@ 90% of MSRP), so I decided against the purchase. It was gone the next time I checked. I'd consider it at 60% of MSRP.

I guess it's OK if you like plastic, but the price is kind of high for what it is. Personally, for quite a bit less, I would try to find a Savage Model 24. Then, you would
have wood and steel instead of Tupperware™.

I'm rather new to the hunting world having just started this year but I'm giving everything a shot, having hunted deer, duck, bear, geese, pheasant, etc already this season. I plan to hook up the snowshoes this winter and continue to hunt rabbit throughout the season here in NY. Every single time I stop in at the local gun shop I handle the Savage Mod. 42. And every time I think, this should be the next gun I buy. Great for rabbit and squirrel but also would be a nice survival gun for camping trips (where weight isn't my first concern). The weight of the gun is reasonable. It feels pretty solid for plastic. It's certainly styled quite handsomely. Yes, this is one gun that I'm lusting over but just can't seem to justify the price on. I may end up selling some older rifles that sit in the cabinet to acquire this "do most" (not do all, clearly...) tool.

For the price I am sure not a fan of all the plastic. I think I will not get this as it does not seem worth it to me. I think a shotgun with sidearm will be the best option or a 12 guage with a .22 barrel conversion.

Most of the matched pairs I have seen are 22/20 gauge. But that 20 is quite a bit better than the 410. Single barrel 12 and 20 gauge shotguns can still be had for $100 or less used.
