Savage has reintroduced their over/under in 410 shotgun and 22 long rifle. The new ones have a synthetic stock but still look a bit heavy for use as an emergency "survival rifle". Retail is $459, street price lower.

Savage will next bring out a 20 ga shotgun with 22 mag rifle barrel. Seems to me that if the next model has a frame strong enough to handle the pressure and recoil of a 20 ga, it could accommodate a .223 or .308 rifle barrel.

Might be something to consider if you don't have or like the discontinued Springfield M6.

Well if it was anything like the old model 24's I'd say yes... because they had both of those calibers available and a few more like the 30-30 and .222. That 42 appears to be the same concept but a completely different gun. That thing is ugly as sin though lol!

RR,

What might be really slick (but no doubt totally impractical) would be interchangeable barrels like some of the Thompson pistols/rifles. Then you could bring either a 22LR or .308 upper barrel, depending upon your needs for that outing.

But I need more toys like a third leg......

Boy that thing is ugly,& I think 20ga.would have been a better choice,I'll stick to my 24C since I'm lucky enough to have one.
I always wanted a 24 in 12ga & 30/30,but couldn't get over the price.

It'll be interesting to see what calibers they add in the future.(and hopefully fix the fore end)

Here's a link to it,just scroll down a bit,it's the second from the bottom......

RescueRiley... check out the pics for a Savage 24C, Camper's companion..... .22lr over 20ga...takedown, wood stock... let mine get away

I refinished the birch stock on an older one of these, for a friend. Once the faux walnut stain was taken off and the light subtle grain of the birch allowed to come through, it was a beautiful gun. The "receiver" portion was case hardened, which looked nice. It would be close to ideal for a small game survival gun.

I don't think my friend paid anywhere near $400 for his. When it comes to utilitarian gun designs, older is usually better.

I picked up a used Mod 24 22/410 for $25.00. I thought it was a good price when I bought it back in 1972. Still have it and the "bill of sale." Never have fired it.

Dagger,

Nice buy! But you've got to haul it out and shoot the thing!

Mdauben: I concur that 20 ga dramatically outperforms 410. However, I will acknowledge that since the advent of the Judge and Governor revolvers, a better range of 410 ammo has hit the shelves.

For the past 3 years I've hunted small game almost exclusively with a .410 with a mod choke, Ive taken pheasant rabbit and squirrel. I find no.6 shot to be a good compromise between spread, volume of shot and knock down power, However you have to get so close to get a clean kill that it can be very frustrating. I think a 20 would be much more forgiving and result in more meat. if they came out with one I would not hesitate, for a min.

I can hit clays with the 410 barrel on my M6 but I must admit that I have not hunted much with it. I keep #6 shot with the gun and agree that's a good way to go. I also have a bunch of 000 buck loads that I believe will significantly outperform traditional 410 slugs. About 4 balls per cartridge and each one is almost as heavy as the old 410 slugs. However, as your post suggests, the 20 does much better with both shot and slugs.
