Yesterday I was at a local Sporting goods store to by some ammo (forgot to bring my wallet so didn't buy any) and saw that they have the Winchester WildCat .22 Bolt action rifle on sale for $189.99. Sale ends today. Normal online price is between $225 and $240 for this rifle. Another shop has the Savage Mark II-G and Mark II-GL (Left handed) for $179.99.

I'm heading out in about 2 hours to buy the ammo I didn't get yesterday. If the mood takes me, I might come home with one of those two rifles. So my question is, which would you buy? The Savage Mark II-GL or the Winchester Wildcat .22? Thanks,

P.S. Chances are I'll just buy ammo, magazines and accesories for my guns. But would still love to hear what people think of these two rifles.

If you are left handed I would buy the Savage, both rifles are about equal in accuracy. If you are right handed I would go with the Winchester as it has a couple pluses in it's favor. The Winchester should be drilled and tapped for scope mounts while the savage uses the less desirable grooved receiver. You also should be getting a totoal of 4 magazines with the Winchester and only one with the Savage...another plus. Also the Winchester in the better looking of the two.

On the Savage side it does come with the accu-trigger and they are known for their accuracy. I would buy the Savage if I was left handed and the Winchester if I was right handed.

I would buy the savage. Winchester is no longer an American company for one, and secondly the savage you are listing has the accu-trigger which I like really well. It has a different feel to it and takes a few shots to get used to, but overall I think its about as good as you can do out of the box. Most of my other guns without the accutrigger either required trigger work or an extensive break in period. I've been happy with my model 11 savage from day one though. I suppose the benchrest guys may have something else to say, but for your average shooters needs I think its pretty good.

Edit:
I missed the left handed thing the first time. I would not buy a left handed gun, unless I shot left handed (or vice versa)

The Savage is made in Canada by Lakefield:eek:

The Winchester Wildcat is Russian made. Centerfire Systems used to sell the Whisper, which was effectively a less refined version of the wildcat for $99 (+shipping and transfer)

All that said, you are best off going with whichever rifle feels better to you.

Didn't realize that about the savage :grumpy: My model 11 is stamped westfield mass. USA , but I suppose that is probably the savage headqaurters and not where it was manufactured.

To be honest my first choice in rimfires is Marlin. I think they're very hard to beat for the money.
