Saw a nice knife - would like a similar one...

This weekend a police officer friend showed me his new knife - a Kershaw Strider 0301. I'm never been interested in knives, but this one really caught my eye. I especially liked the way it opened, it was absolutely amazing. The weight and feel in my hand was excellent too. Unfortunately, it's more than I can afford to spend on a knife.

Anyone got any suggestions on a knife that opens/feels like his knife did? I've been looking at the Kershaw Spec and Speed bump series, they look similar but given I know nothing about knives I'm not sure if they're similar.

thanks...rick

Welcome to Blade Forums Rick.

That opening mechanism that you like is called "Speed Safe" and was designed by Ken Onion (a custom knife maker who works with Kershaw).

Kershaw has quite a few great models in their line up that use Speed Safe and they have a forum right here. Check the Kershaw forum out and see if there is a retail store in your area where you can check the different models out in person.

I hope you enjoy your experience here.

Thanks Gus - That's a good idea. I live in a small town in the Idaho Panhandle, not many stores here to check them out (unless Walmart carries them). I'll look around for stores in Spokane, WA - there should be some there.

I think you will find one at a price that you will be happy with. Ken also designs many of the Kershaw knives so I also think you will not have a tough time finding one at a reasonable price that feels good in your hand.

There are quite a few online retailers that carry the Kershaws. Walmart also carries a few.

My coworker has a Kershaw Colorado State Police knife that opens very fast. I am not sure of the model. It was given to him by his son-in=law. It is very nice.

If you like serrations, WalMart may be the way to go for your Kershaw fix. If you don't like serrations, try local flea markets etc. I've seen a lot of Kershaw assisted openers at several in PA. Be wary though, lots of clones that look identical. Most do not have the Kershaw logos etc, or speed safe mechanism.

Here's a recommendation that doesn't offer the speedsafe system, but:
- you may like the general shape,
- it is MUCH cheaper than the ZT (as you requested)
- and it feels incredibly good in the hand for the price (not as fantastic as the ZT but really very good for the price).
In short, you can do much worse than starting off in this hobby with a Boker M type !!!

As an alternative, Kershaw (ZT) makes a similar, non-assisted model, the 0200. There is a steel difference (S30V vs. 154-CM), but the 0200 is cheaper, and slightly bigger.

I wouldn't bring it up, normally, but I'm looking to buy a 0200 soon, so...

I agree that the 0200 is something you might want to look at. It's from Zero Tolerance (Kershaw) and it's about $50 less than the 301. It's an excellent knife. It's almost a mix between the 301 and the Kershaw Spec Bump.

That 0302 is good deal. If I did not already have it and an 0300 I would jump on it. That's $50 less than everyone else

Save up and get the 0301. You won't be sorry.

Honestly.

It comes with a life time warranty, and is built like a tank.
When it comes to knives, you get what you pay for.
If spending that much is out of the question, I would suggest the spec bump. As I am a fan of the blade geometry and stud locks. :)

Edit: I would also suggest maybe looking into ZT 0200s since they're a bit cheaper.

I have one of those too and they rock as well. What a $128 steal . . . It's almost as smooth as my Skirmish.
