My brother does forest mapping for a lumber company in northern california coast. I told him to be on the look out for some sawe blades for me and he called me today and said he had a few for me. From what i understand they are the blades from the bark remover process. thik he said they were 2 inches wide buy 2 feet long and about 1/4 inch thick. they are free to me and has 8 or so . Is this L6 steel oris that only in older blades? thanks

Place it on your computer monitor so we can get a good test of it.
Seriously,it may be usable, but you will never know what it is.If you can find the manufacturer, you may be able to find out,but even then it is not always clear.Test a piece in the shop (spark test, quench and break, etc.) and see if it is worth spending the time to make a blade from.Could be anything from 1095 to L-6.
The second point is that if you don't know the exact metal,HT is just a guess.HT is a large part of what makes a knife shaped piece of metal into a first class blade.
I always advise using known steel from a good source.

What Stacy said. There's a good posibility that it's a low carbon like 4140 or some such with carbide teeth. I've got some gang saw blades that act like 15&20, but not L-6, I save them for mixing with damascus. If you've got a big enough blade to make a dozen or so knives it might be worth your time to develop a heat treatment for that blade. Other wise buy new steel, it's cheaper in the long run.
