As a fan of flea markets, I saw one I know nothing about. Does anyone know anything about a 'Cut Devil Ax'? I didn't buy it but am thinking about it. Any help or info would be great.

I don't know of a cut devil axe but I know of cut devils. They are a railroad tool used for cutting track. It's essentially a handled heavy cold-cut tool. One worker holds it against the track while another worker strikes it. A piece of track would be scored all around in this manner. Then the scored rail would be raised up with the scored end overhanging. Workers would beat the overhanging edge with a sledge and it would shear off along the score line.

I have one out in the garage.

Thanks, Pegs. I might get it, it would be something different to have. It actually says 'Cut Devil Ax' on the head.

Is it axe-shaped or is it shaped more like a maul?

The old railroad cut devils look more like a maul but with a narrower bit.

It looks like a maul with a narrow bit......and kinda long. Is it worth the 12 bucks being asked? I do think it's really cool. Is it really old? I can't tell, it looks good.

I'd say it's worth $12. But offer 'em $8! ;)

It's got to be made of some hella high carbon steel in order to cut track.

Thanks, Steve, very cool & informative. That is a serious bit of steel. Cuts bolts (tough) and cuts the track (really tough) & I like old tools and labor of love type work. Old trucks, old tractors and old tools :D life is good
