Saw steel bowie

Here's a bowie I've been working on this week. I've still got a little more work to do on the blade before I epoxy it. First time I have used any ivory except the the poor man variety. I used both iron and wrought iron from 3 different wagon wheels for the fittings and also the same saw steel I used on the fighter from a week ago. The blade on the bowie is 9" and is 14" overall and weighs about a pound.

Ray, will you be bringing any of these beauties you've been posting to AZ? I'd love the chance to look one (or more) over in person.

Yes, I'll be sending a few before I leave. I'm looking forward to a change. Some warmer temps will sure be a nice break.

Both great looking knives Ray. I liked the crown stag one and this one even BETTER!

But the handle is TOO SHORT:D:D Just kidding.

Thanks for posting them Ray.

Beautiful work

If you don't mind me asking, approximately how thick was the saw blade you used :)

How did you like working with the Ivory ?

Ray, something you said in one of your recent threads really struck a cord in me. It's how I feel too.
"I truly enjoy making knives and other edged weapons. I find what I do highly entertaining and I feel very blessed to be able to have found something I enjoy so much! " Ray Richard
IMHO, your love for knifemaking is very evident in your work. I also see it in the way you share your forging tricks, tools & knowledge, your material handling secrets , the list goes on ........ ;)

Just wanted to let you know the impact you've had on me in regards to knifemaking, and to once again say, Thank you

You are a HUGE asset to our craft !

David, That's a very nice compliment! I've enjoyed being able to share my limited amount of knowledge in a craft that I'm so fond of. As to the saw steel what I'm starting out with is a fat 1/8". Up until a month or so ago I haven't had a forge burner that would reach welding temps but since I stepped up to the next size larger bathroom exhaust fan for a blower welding isn't a problem. :D Both the blades in the picture are two pieces thick. The bowie at the blade/guard junction is a strong 3/16" thick and the fighter just a little bit lighter in thickness. Actually I found the ivory pretty simple to work with but did learn a few things to look for if I purchase anymore in the future. At the last Oregon Show there was an ivory dealer right across the isle from me. Just to much temptation way to close. :) Now if I can just find away to color the ivory........ This is the first piece of natural handle material I have used in years that I haven't tried to alter the color. I figure by tomorrow I'll have the bowie done and will be getting some pictures of it finished then.

I appreciate all the other comments!

Wow! I love both of those! I was considering two pieces if whitetail crown for a WIP, and you helped me make my decision!

I agree 100% David , talking with Ray at Blade West , and hearing him talk about knifemaking has re-energized me. Every once in awhile you meet someone who leaves a life long lasting impression on you, and when their work leaves a lasting impression as well , that is just icing on the cake.

Great work Ray.

Thanks again for the reply's !

Lorien, I think this last bathroom exhaust fan/blower will do it for me unless something unexpected happens again.

I did get this bowie finished like I was expecting. Watching the Super Bowl and it did slow down progress some but didn't really set me back much. I sure did enjoy the game but I came real close to heading to the shop before the second quarter started. I'm glad I stuck around!

Here's a few pictures of the bowie finished.
