Well, I got a new job. It's at a metal fabrication shop. Lots of welders, presses and grinders. Now what am I going to do with that?:D I got a circular blade from one of the chop saws. Any idea what type of steel those things are made from? Anyone with experience working with these or similar I would appreciate your advise. Thanks!

Why it's made from saw steel of course!:D Really you'd need to call the manufacturer of the saw blade to find out what it is because it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. My guess would be something close to 1075, possibly with nickle added and maybe not.

My experience has been with lage circular saw blades from lumber mills and they usually (but not always!) are L6.

Cut a piece, heat to non-magnetic and quench in oil, put in a vice, and see if it breaks like glass.

Mark,if that blade is from a cold saw, good luck.We had one in our shop and a blade broke one day.So I thought lets see if this is usable for a knife.Tried annealling it but while cooling it shattered launching shards around the shop.Tried cutting one of the pieces with a torch and it just fizzled up, didn't cut well either. My guess is a large amount of tungsten in the alloy.I would check with the manufacturer first before attempting what I did.Dave

DC, that sounds like high speed steel, never been able to do much of anything with it.

Checked again tonight, High speed steel, Cold saw, Oh well I'm gonna mess with it anyway and see what I can come up with. If it don't work I still have about 20 blades from a split saw at the packing plant to work with that seem to work pretty well. (I still don't know what type steel they are.) Thanks for the advise folks :)
And thank to all the people who wished me well while I was looking for a new job.
