Sawby Combat Utility opinions?

Okay, so I've gotten to handle a Bailey Bradshaw version of Mr. Sawby's self-lock, and it was VERY nice. I'm wondering if anyone here who might have had one of Mr. Sawby's Combat Utility folders with the self-lock might chime in here with their opinions. Is this a gent's knife? A sturdy knife that can go the distance? I know that the lock is built into the bolsters, but I'm still a bit confused as to how it works. Is there a spring? Any problems with blade-play over time? This would be a EDC item- albeit an expensive one. If I'm going to spend that much money on one, I'm going to carry the darn thing. Opinions???

Opinions about Mr. Sawby's work in general??

Getting one of Bailey's knives with the Sawby lock has made me interested in Sawby knives as well. It seems like he uses that lock on all types of knives from what I've seen on the Internet.

The one thing I've seen with my Bradshaw knife is that the Sawby lock has gotten better the more I use it. When I first got it there was one specific place I had to push to close it, but now the "sweet spot" is wider along the grooved button at the bottom.

I look forward to hearing from the Sawby experts.

The self-lock is virtually perfect is operation...however it takes rather tight engineering to make it work. Buck knives tried it and it was a bit much for them.

The combat utility is a stunning knife; the fit and finish is such that is actually tough to see the line separating the blade and backspacer when open. It is a very thin knife, yet surprisingly solid and stable...the Sawby lock is without play.

This knife is not a show piece, it is a cutter! Very useful blade shape and sturdy pocket clip.

and maybe the nicest, (though not as nice an EDC as the utility)...

What a great knife!

Nice photo of a great looking knife, Greg. I like that we can see the release button and filework in your photo.

I'd really like to get one of his knives.

First off you can't go wrong with any knife by Scott, I've owned at least 10 of his. The C/U is a great EDC, thin and the lock is ambidextrous. The cases on Scott's knives are integral, not often found.

Here's one I had Julie W. engrave:

Win, that's a stunner. Thanks for posting it.

I too emailed Mr. Sawby yesterday and now I'm on the wait list. I will have a lot of time to keep changing my mind on which model to get.

Well, I got an email reply, and I think I may go for it. He'll be back in mid-May, so I'll email him then. I'd like a good EDC, though I've never paid that much for a knife before. Now the question: To engrave or not?!?

Here are a few I have /had from Scott in my favorite material.

Very nice Win!!!

As to buying one from a dealer, its tempting but when spending this much on a knife I'd prefer to get it direct from the maker. Call it a quirk. Its kind of like my baseball collecting, I only have one dealer I go through, and for the most part the only balls I have are ones I've had signed myself.

Well, I couldn’t wait, even though I’m on the wait list.

Got this one from Dave at Steeladdictions.com. The bolster is stainless, although you wouldn’t know it from my scan, and I forgot to wipe the scanner off prior to using it, but you get the picture. No clip on this combat utility.

Like everyone else said, solid in everyway. It will probably out last the jacket in the background, and that's saying something.

Nice knife Mike! It's amazing how strong Sawby knives are. All in a very slim frame too. Hard to beat.

Greg

Thanks for the nice comments. I swear I’m going to use it…someday. And a public thanks to Chefget for taking the time to educate me on Damascus through his emails.

I think I need to tone down the sizes of my pictures.
