Sawcut Bone

I am planning to buy a new Case Stockman and I can't decide between the normal amber jigged bone scale and the rancher style sawcut.

I have a trapperlock in the amber jigged style that I love, I find the pictures online don't do it justice. I have a feeling the rancher style is the same way.

Which looks better in person? If anyone has pictures that give a better idea of how it really looks that would be great.

I really like both - sorry I have no pics...
But a couple of things to consider - the amber bone has more texture, which I like.
The sawcut rancher has no shield, not sure if that makes a difference to you or not, instead it has Casexx engraved into the bone at one end and U.S.A. at the other.
The sawcut does look really nice in person, but I read on here somewhere that sawcut occasionally will have little divots in the bone, and apparently that's the nature of sawcut, so if you can't pick it out in person and these bother you.....

The standard jigged amber bone is nice, but a bit 'common', if that makes sense. The sawcut "Rancher" bone is more attractive and interesting in real life than in the pictures.

The "deep canyon jigged bone" is outstanding as well.

But my vote for the Most Attractive Case Handle Material Currently Available is the Smooth Chestnut Bone.

I've been very tempted by that Smooth Chestnut Bone, wish they offered it in CV....

I tend to buy the CV models also, but the desire for that smooth bone over-rode all other considerations. :)

Outstanding when done well, but a poor dye job on Case's part has resulted more than once with something resembling "one of those fake Halloween scars."

(I've seen some less-well-dyed Deep Canyon in person, and the description is apt-- in addition to funny!)

On the other hand Doug Add had great success dyeing his to a more pleasing color (though his wasn't as Fake-Halloween-Scar-Level-bad to begin with).

-- Just wanted to put that out there, because if one doesn't have a chance to pick the knife in person, surprises may await.

Too funny. :)

I have too many knives to keep track of from memory, but I think I bought that exact same knife, the Mini Copperhead in Deep Canyon. I've been meaning to post a picture of it for some time because the dark red-ish bone from Case is so beautiful. :)

Sounds like you got a good one! Next time you remember you have it (heh), please take some pictures. I'd love to see it. :)

I'm back and forth on the sawcut bone they are doing lately.

The ones I've seen without the shield have looked pretty nice...and it seemed like early on they weren't putting shields on most of them. Now they've added what looks like an overly large shield on most of the sawcut ones...I haven't seen them in person yet...but they look a bit odd.

I actually liked that it didn't have the shield because ever since they started gluing them on I've been worried about losing it.

Thanks for telling me about the divots, the one in the link you provided me doesn't look too bad but depending on how it looked that could be something that bothers me. I'll think it over for a couple days before ordering.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, it has been very helpful.

I really like the looks of the sawcut but the one that I have is only jigged on the mark side. the pile side is smooth with no sawcut jigging at all. I don't know how often this happens, mine may be the only one, but it is something to keep in mind. The scales match otherwise.

Have a great day,
Jeff

In the interest of time savings, I dropped these knives from the conversation onto the scanner and draped a shirt over them.

Top knife is the jigged amber bone. Nice, but I wish it had more color and deeper jigging.
Second is the sawcut amber bone. It has a very glossy finish to it, a bit like plastic, but it's obviously genuine bone. Perhaps it's heat-treated or Case puts some sort of sealant on the scales.
Third is my favorite, the smooth chestnut bone. The shield side of mine is about average for the material. Some I've seen are darker, look like wood from a distance. The opposite side of mine has more mottling of oranges and browns - quite stunning.

Bottom picture is the mini copperhead in deep canyon bone.

This new scanner doesn't do well with knives. It has a great field of depth, but the glare off metal is horrible. Epson V600. Liked the old Epson better, but the color was wonky when scanning pictures.

Thanks, Bob W.

I see what you mean about the metal glare, but your image is still an excellent comparison--- it's great seeing all those covers together in one, consistently lit shot-- and far better than anything Case provides.
