I currently live in a relatively rural area of upstate ny, but will be moving to a Buffalo suburb (and going to graduate school in the city itself). I was wondering if it is legal for me to carry an axe, pick, folding saw (sven saw), in the back of my jeep in a bag.

I currently usually have a small beat up duffel with a cheap army e-tool and a sven saw but was wondering if I could get in any trouble if I was pulled over for a traffic stop and the cop searched the vehicle (lets say I gave them permission). They would be in a bag so they would be "concealed" in the vehicle.

You never know, but I can not even imagine a situation where a officer would consider real life tools like that concealed weapons. I think you would have to have run over the officers kids box of kittens or something for him to even try.

You never know though. If it is an actual concern then you can get a small luggage style lock and lock up the zipper. That added to the fact that they are not really within reach should make it a done deal.

Anything can be a weapon but the items you listed are not weapons per se in NYS law. I would be concerned about the axe on school grounds as it is the one item that someone could consider a bit dangerous. Ask you college security office BEFORE bringing it on campus. In NYS you are allowed to carry a knife concealled, in fact the NYC Admin Code forces you to carry in out of sight.....

I guess the only thing I should be concerned about is the "on-campus" parking. I'll have to check with University Police. But, as far as a regular traffic stop, I can't imagine a cop would hassle me about them. Hell, if they did, I could be in trouble simply carrying a folding saw after coming back from a backpacking trip.
