I’m looking at the possibility of getting a sawyer anvil. I read online someone mentioned that they are designed for cold working saw blades, not so much hot working.
Any opinions or experience with hot forging on a sawyer’s anvil?

I don’t need a horn and I like the face size of a sawyer anvil

thanks
Harbeer

I don't know why they wouldn't work for forging. The top is usually a welded on hardened plate.

Yes it appears that way.

it’s in Italy and I’m in France. It’s about 150 kg. He’s going to send me a video of it with a rebound and noise check

Are you familiar with Blacksmith Paradise? They are in Austria and have a lot of anvils to choose from:

Thx. Will check them out

If Austria is withing your range, check willhaben (local classifieds), there is a lot of (nice) anvils.

thanks, but no, the classifieds indeed have good values, but they require, patience, communication and timing.
I'll have what I buy delivered with a truck.

If the anvil has a surface that is designed to withstand cold steel without excessive damage, i highly doubt that hot steel will do anything to it.

At Nick Anderson's (@nandaknives) shop in Oakland, Calif there are about a dozen or so top tier anvils to choose from in all different shapes/sizes - I know that he prefers the sawyer anvil for most of his forging.

He also gave me a 6''x6''x12'' Block of hardened steel to use as an anvil - he said its just like his sawyers anvil but a little smaller.

I’m in France right now. I ended up getting this peddinghaus from a dealer in Austria

Nice looking anvil! I just bought one very similar here in the US. You might want to move the bar securing the anvil to the stand. The one closest to the camera. The block shaped "foot" is actually an upsetting block. Used for upsetting material, it's lower than the face so you can swing a hammer at the opposite end of the stock more easily...

Yes thanks I do know that it’s an upsetting block. That hold down bar actually broke off in shipping... and so it was just easier to weld it on at that point. And when my neighbor suggested to weld it at that point I didn’t think about it.

as far as needing an upsetting block I haven’t needed one in five years so I don’t think I’ll be using it anyway.

I did also pick up this vise at the same time which I think I would rather use for any upsetting

Awesome, I have a leg vise that is waiting to be set up... I've had it for years and just have never set it up. It's dumb. I need to get on it!!
