i'm not taking credit - i saw these mods from other sites/youtube in the past and decided to do it with my sawyer mini as well...figured i'd share in case no one have seen them yet.

first, test if the soda/water bottle's threads is compatible with the sawyer mini by threading it on as if you're going to filter the contents (in case soda/water bottle makers change the thread pitch down the road like platypus did, who knows). if it seals just fine then cut the threaded part off from the main body.

now glue the cap on the side that you just cut off...use enough glue all around to make it water tight. i used gorilla glue on mine.

now you have a plug for the dirty water/intake side of the filter and prevents dirty water from leaking into something else...i usually try to shake off all the water after i'm done anyway and don't use a filter during the freezing months (i either boil or use katadyn micropur mp1 tablets instead) but in case i do i can stick the filter inside my down bag/jacket/pocket without water leaking out in case i forgot to shake it off or something.

i cut the bottom of the original bag open and put a hanging cord so i can use it as a gravity filter.

then i used a platypus drinking tube with a cap to connect the clean water bag to the filter.

i could've used a straight up tube with nothing else but i wanted an even more hands-free approach - in case the clean bag tips over then i don't lose all the water. plus, it already comes with a clip so when i'm done i can just clip the hose up to the cordage to stop the flow and keep it off the dirt, etc.

note that if there's air in the line then that will get transferred to the clean bag and will eventually prevent water from draining in. when that happens i just open the cap a little to squeeze the air out and it'll flow again...or let the water flow to flush the air out then connect it to the clean bag...also, i can drill a tiny vent hole in the cap but it doesn't bother me enough to do it.

works well so i might use a much bigger bag for the dirty water for less refilling...gives me more time to lounge in the hammock :)

Thats brilliant thanks JV3. I recently bought one of these. I see you cut the pouch open; your probably aware of this but you can buy replacement pouches, if you wanted to revert to using it normally.

Great mod for sealing it up and avoiding dreaded leakage. In pic 6, does the screw on lid that connects the water tube to the filtered water bag come with the Mini?

thanks! i'm happy if i can contribute something positive here once in awhile :)

no. that's part of the platypus tube.

Good tutorial. I have been messing around with the Frontier Pro. Lots of possibilities with these little systems.

JV,
Maraming salamat Pare ;)
Assuming the "dirty" water is relatively clear, how long using the gravity feed to fill a 2L bag? I have never used a non pump filter so I am not sure how much patience is needed if you are refilling on a pit stop rather than camp stop.

Thanks,
Bill

That's going to happen with mine. Great mod. Thanks for sharing.

you're welcome!

i just tested it and it's just under 10 minutes for 2 liters of tap water. i used a new 2 liter bag with no hole at the top for refilling and i noticed there's a vaccuum effect which i suspect might have slowed the flow a bit...i bet if i cut a relief hole the flow will be even faster, maybe twice as fast, just going by my original sawyer bag's performance which seems to be way faster...i'll report back when i get a chance.

Thanks again :)

That lets me know this will be ideal even for short breaks- gathering bits to add this to my kit ;)

Does the fitting on the end of the Platypus tube fit the Evernew bags well enough for refilling? I see you posed it in the "studio" with the Evernew bag but in the field with the Platypus bags. Thanks.

Try Platypus Big Zip reservoirs. Any reservoir can work well enough, but I like the big opening to catch from waterfalls or scoop from shallow sources.

yes, it fits just fine...it's only the high pressure from the squeezing that causes the sawyer to leak with a platypus bag.

thanks! i'll look into that...for now i'll just use one of my evernew 2 liter bags.
