My sister-in-law visited yesterday, a reasonably rare occurance. She had a nice little wooden artisan box for my wife that she picked up in Sedona, and she presented me with this little lockback.
Seems she had purchased it for my father-in-law some time ago on a trip to Alaska. He cherished it, and was somewhat despondent when he had to relinquish it upon entering hospice care.
He passed a few years ago, and he is missed.
We had a rocky start to our relationship, I was a young punk from Hawai'i, he was an old drunk from Alabama. I got older, he got sober and we developed a strong mutual respect for each other.
Francis H. Mayson (Mason) was a DI during WWII, a highly respected painter for Disneyland until his retirement and a great auto mechanic. (This is where most of our bonding sprang from)
He was very proud of his little Dan Gwynn of Hamilton, Montana lockback with bone scales and sterling silver eagle inlay, and I am now very proud to be in possession of it as well.
With a 2" blade length, 5" overall length and 3" closed, it's very nicely made, has nickel-silver bolsters, brass liners and a very smooth pivot and solid lockup.
The solid maple box is as finely crafted as the knife and complements the overall pride of ownership.
I've decided to call it "Mayson" in Frank's honor and look forward to it being a constant companion.
Some pictures;
Just wanted to share...Thanks!
