As all of you may know and some may regret I am making some arrows from those dark green garden stakes available at every hardware store known to man . Through heat straightening and sanding the finish came off some places and I wanted to refinish them as close to orginal as possible . A buddy of mine mentioned the original green finish was in fact some kinda
anti-molding agent with green coloring added . Well says I , I,m not likely to come up with any of that so I settled on a satin finish forest green varathane . It didn,t turn out too bad . Just about then the light bulb went on and alarm bells went off . certainly you remember all the green treated lumber that was recalled and all the kids playgrounds that were torn up and replaced because they were made with this arsenic treated lumber ? Could the green garden stakes be made with the same green crap ? The reason I am asking and why the bells went off is that it smells the same as that stuff when I sanded it . I,ve had that stuff on my hands enough for them to turn green and proabably breathed it in while sanding as well . Can any of you paint and stain gurus shed some light for my rapidly dimming poisoned eyesight ? L:O:L

Just don't shoot any kids with the arrows and you should be fine.

as much as I like children of others I am more concerned with any of my future brood sporting surplus limbs or other oddities . I realise the stuff has been banned or restricted . Chinese enviromental concerns seem to be somewhat lax when compared to our own . I just want to make sure this stuff is reasonably non toxic .

Could just be..ummm dunno how it's spelt lacqer? Chinese are found of that on wood.

(my spelling sucks I know :D )

Try putting some in with a rat to gnaw on them. Smear with peanut butter.

If you need throwaway/low cost arrowheads, consider used X-acto blades. Archery doesn't have to be expensive! A lost Easton arrow is worth many cuss words.

REPLY : Hows about a politician instead ! L:O:L Actually since the " Role of a police officer" thread I have decided to give politicians another chance . They are all just sweety-pies with me . Yeah right ! I have at least tried to keep an open mind about them .

As far as razor blades for arrow heads ? It might be a little hard on the targets . L:O:L
Local regulations are much more strict as to size of broadhead these days .

How about a dye? Probably not FOOD type but there are other types, maybe even RIT.
Just a thought.
Copper> the oxidation is green, and I actually thought the lumber was treated with it. I don't know process from copper oxidation to liquid but it's out there somewhere.

I,m a careful cuss . It makes up for how careless I am .O:K:a bit heavy for a Sunday morning coming down ? If a man finds that he doesn,t take enough care the only thing he can do is to take more care . Easily done ?
Except it is a concious action instead of what is taken for granted in most peoples work routine . I do tend to over-think things . Its a whole lot better than bulling ahead in most instances .
The newer wood preservatives have the arsenic removed from the formula .
One of my buddies built an entire commercial marina including docks out of the stuff . It is the worst application as wave action and constantly being soacked leaches the poison into the water . Childrens playgrounds and garden fencing were the next biggies .

You are on the right track . I will proabably track down the newer green wood treatment without the nasty stuff in it . I suspect the Chinese just dump the bamboo in a bath of the stuff .Exactly as you suggested in a dye bath .
