This axe head is in great condition and has really nice shape. It’s just over 3lb’s. While cleaning it up I noticed a void inside the eye at the narrow end. It’s symmetrical, about an inch long and maybe a quarter inch deep. Anyone familiar with this way of producing axes?

Looks like a P that was added by the owner to me.

This looked to be a relatively modern 40's-50's Michigan pattern and I would say the void is probably just a minor defect in the drop forging.

I've got two more axes marked only with a "P" that I can't identify. Strangely, the two heads are nearly identical, though one was hung as a boy's axe and the other as a hatchet. Even more peculiar, both hats were painted white before being inserted into the eye:

The "P" definitely appears to have been stamped in hot metal by the manufacturer before the heads were painted. Anyone know more about my pair of Ps? T-A
