The Strider/Buck Military Folder 889 is an awsome knife . Just got it the other day and it is great to have it back (foolishly traded my first one off). I love how you are able to choke up on the blade for small cutting tasks such as wittling or cutting around people. Then in the regular position you can get a lot of "umph" when cutting away at something. Looks like it could baton through stuff too, but I won't be doing that to my new knife just yet. Maybe once just to see how it does but not a constant thing 'cause I don't want to ruin my knife. Feels like a tank and I really like the open back so I can clean it easier. The clip was really tough when I bought it, so I got a screwdriver and slowly kept bending the clip up until it loosed it just enough to be usable now. I can't wait to take it camping, hopefully soon. This will be my new EDC and campknife for a while now, maybe I'll save up and get the 154CM version off ebay :D.

Be sure to tell me how your 889 has done, thanks in advance, J.

I got a 889 about 6 months ago. I like it a lot. Very stout, easy opening. I've carried it a lot. I think you'll enjoy yours.

They're suprisingly good, especially considering what they cost. You might not believe it, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you get the G-10 model. I know they list it as having 154CM, but the one's I've seen seem to have ATS-34. Either way, the G-10 makes it an even better knife. I just don't care for that TACCOM, but that's me.

 Truer words have never been typed! ;)

I love mine!(once you get used to the serrations) (882)

I love my 889 and have EDC'd it a lot. It's a big knife but it still carries well in the pocket because of it's 'thinness'.

Here is a pic of mine when new:

I like mine very well but that handle material is rough on pants. I really prefer the ease of sharpening of the 420 HC model. The 154 cm would have better edge retention. Good choice of knife and enjoy it.

I love my SMBF. The grip is phenomenal and it takes a much better edge than I expected. One of my favorite EDCs.

My favorite.

By the way, I remember a thread about someone who customized his. He put tigerstripes on the blade and clip and did some work on the handle. Can anyone remember where it was or do a search for the cheap skate here? :D

I love my 889 also. The grind lets it cut like a thin knife, but the wide blade with the thick spine makes it strong. The only complaint is that the clip only allows the knife to be carried point up, and in that position the pins that stop the blade in the open position tended to catch on my pants when I drew the knife and pull the blade open somewhat. That was OK until I cut my finger on the partly open blade, then I took the clip off and just carry the knife in my pocket. It's an everyday carry, and I think it's a great knife.

Well, I believe the collaboration has ended, so if you find something in a store, it's what they have left.

As to the models with 154CM, they're supposed to be on the 882's with Ti liners, & black G-10 scales. I don't know how many they made with 154CM, because most, if not all the ones, have ATS-34 (All Bos heat treated), Ti liners, & G-10 scales. So, basically looking for G-10 models.

The 880's & 881's aren't bad, either, but their a different size.

Now be careful though, there were 2 different models of 882 also. and the 887 looks like an 882 but it has a 420HC blade...

882BKX = TACCOM handles, (like SBMF)
882SBTG = G-10 handles

I lucked out because my Academy sports and outdoors nearby had 3 in stock recently. I've been hassling them for months about "when are the SBMF 889's coming in?" Half of the workers had no idea what I was talking about. Finally last week I called them again and the guy remembered me, from calling for the same darn knife for 3 months ;), and he said, "yup, we got 3 of them this morning." I ran so fast I think I got to the store before he hung up the phone :D. This was one knife buy that I don't feel any guilt or regrets on buying. I'm actually proud of myself for keeping the money on hand until the moment I could buy it. Great knife and I will have to look for one in either the 154CM or the ATS-34. Pretty much the same steel composition, but the 154CM looks like it has the G-10 online and the ATS-34 has the TACCOM. It doesn't matter to me as to which handle, 'cause I don't mind the TACCOM. That stuff has a better grip than a lot of my G-10 handled knives anyway. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who likes it.

True, that's why I wrote that the 882 "with" Ti liners & G-10 scales is supposed to have 154CM. I had the 882BKX (ATS-34 & TACCOM scales). While I haven't handled/seen one, I've emailed people that were selling or trading what "apparently" is an 882SBTG, but still had ATS-34 (They did have G-10 scales & I'm assuming Ti liners).

Having said that, the 880 & 881's aren't bad, either. I understand the 1st batch had BG42, but the ones I have are all ATS-34 with Ti liners & G-10 scales. I currently have: 880SP, 881SP, & an 881T. Now, if I can get my hands on an 882SBTG, I'd be a happy camper. :D

All I have seen/own have the ATS-34 blade steel regardless of BKX or SBTG.

Its still good stuff ;)
