scabbard conversion

Hey guys, I have a question. I recently received a Malla from Uncle. I love this thing. One problem though. Although I was able to unsheath it, I can't for the life of me resheath it. I don't want to punch through it, as I have noticed that there is a general tendency to. So now I have hit upon the crazy idea of trying a scabbard conversion. I want to try to make the scabbard an open quick draw style. Does anyone have any tips? I have no idea of how to start. Thanks in advance.

Tap with leather or rubber mallet ( or whatever works ) til the khuk's back all the way into the sheathe. Find a tree stump or solid block of wood. Put a couple towels down, and whip the khuk ( still in the scabbard ) down as if you were trying to split a redwood. That should do it!

Terry was telling me about the Malla not long ago and one of its idiosyncrasies. Seems that its "shape" is a large part of the problem. The point will actually hit the wood inside at the start of the curve and stick there, you have to kinda jiggle and work the blade past that place IIRC.

Between all the information overload I get for my little feeble brain it also seems like Terry fixed his scabbard like what you are suggesting, but I don't remember if it was for the Malla or another model. I do "know" that he modified one of his scabbards similar to the Cold Steel sheaths with the open back. Brian has made a similar one in kydex that looks really nice that he's posted about here.

Christian,
Is this the same Malla you e-mailed me about?
I made a quick draw sheath for my malla and it works great. I have a small old khukuri that has a open back sheath but no belt loop or retaining stap.
It's too hard to explain how to make this sheath on the forum, it would be easier to look at the pics that have been posted.
They will show how it is made better than I can tell you.
Take it easy.
Terry
