Scabbard Design

Namaste everyone,

I have been wondering if the brass tip cover has always been a feature of khukuri scabbards or is this a fairly recent addition?

Where tip covers only for protecting the tip of the scabbard?

They would seem to be somewhat effective and relatively quick to deploy (when wearing as sash) as a weapon.
