hi everyone first post here, I have 2 German Artillery Officers swords that were given to me by my father, supposedly his Uncle brought them home from the war, anyways he painted ( rattle can ) the scabbards back when he was a teenager......would it be horrible to try and refinish there, I have options of hot bluing or parkerizing at work ( I'm a gunsmith )

what would have been the original finish ....I'm gonna take a few pics tomorrow in the sunlight and post...thanks

mods if this should be in the sword forum please feel free to move

As long as we are talking about the scabbards and not the swords we're good to go.

Spray paint is one tough bugger to get off of leather without ruining it. Hopefully someone here has some good advice.

Now if they are metal scabbards there should be some paint removers that are mild enough not to pit the old metal underneath the paint. Some of those metal scabbards were not the best quality materials and the metal can be rather brittle with age and oxidation.

Good luck and WELCOME to the forums! :D

In regards to the leather parts of the scabbard you may need to solvent strip it then recondition it. Leather, is amazingly durable and since it was almost certainly solvent dyed hitting it with a stripper is unlikely to do much damage, then you'd have to recolor the leather and deeply condition it with something like Pecards or Hubbards.

Sounds like a fun project.
