Scabbard repair

I just received this outstanding Uddha sword from Yangdu in her usual record time. Only bad thing is that the postal service somehow damaged the brass tip on the scabbard. No worries, I would rather repair than return and have already contacted Yangdu with my intentions. Returning it wouldn't help her and its something I should be able to handle. Any suggestions or hints would be welcome. Thanks in advance. ;)

Couple different options:

If you don't care about the point, but want it to look "not bent", maybe just take a roto-tool or hacksaw and trim off the bent part. It'll still to the job, but the bent part with be gone.

Try to hammer it out with a small hammer

Use a candle or lighter and CAREFULLY heat it until the glue melts and work off the chape. If you want to repair the chape, you can now put something hard behind it (like a screwdriver) while you try to hammer it true....or you could just leave the chape off. It really doesn't do much of anything expect poke you in the thigh/calf:p

Good luck:)

Thanks for the tips Steely  I went ahead and removed the chape but after hammering , grinding , and reshaping, it looks pretty janky.

I think my best bet is finding another chape. Hopefully Yangdu has a spare or maybe a beat up scabbard that could be a donor.

Either way, I'll keep trying ;)

Big W?

send me your mailing address, I've got a few I've taken off. Send back what you do don't use.

enjoy. Read safety thread.

Big W?

Give me the widest dimension of your current chape. The Uddha may be to wide for those I have.

Just post it, ok?

We'll get 'er done.

At worst you could epoxy a large brass jingle bell over the end to conceal the damage.
I did it once and it worked out well.

At its widest point its 7/8. Not really that wide, actually pretty narrow. I believe a chape from a sirupate or a similar narrow kukri would probably work.

Also, I considered the jingle bell , as I have a couple of scabbards with them already, but its pretty much past that point. :thumbdn:

Big W?

So far I've found three, two too small, one possibility. I've got others around, I know.

Hang in, but don't refuse other offers. :)

Just an idea, and this may or may not work. If you have a steel punch (or if you know an ironworker and can get him to loan you a spud wrench). Take the tapered end of the punch (or spud) and insert it into the chape, then take a light hammer (like a tack hammer would be perfect) and lightly tap the chape back into shape. Should work fine with a punch as a backing up tool. Would have a very close diameter curve to it.
Just a thought, hopefully it will work for you.

Yeah, I'll would appreciate it  I'll return what I don't use plus postage ;)

Did you receive my info ?

Got it, Warren. Go out to rural route carrier Monday.

don't worry about postage, just send what you don't use back.

We're all in this together. :)

Completely unrelated to the post... sort of.

This is why I love the HI forum. It really is a community.

Big W, if you're up to considering foregoing the chape, that rubber tool dip used to coat plier handles and such goes really well on the scabbard ends. I generally take off the chape as it tends to poke and tear at pants legs when carried on a belt. Not as purdy as a chape but works really well and if you get the black dip it matches the leather really nice.

Looks like a good idea.
