Does anyone know how to tighten up the scabbard so the khukris does not just come right out. I just recieved a M43 (will have pictures later) and the khukris slides out of the scabbard with out any resistance. just wondering if there was a technique to this or if any one had experience?

Hello Baddleg. I have had this problem with most of my kuks. Here's how I solved it. I cut a piece of leather, maybe one inch square, and glue it into mouth of the sheath. I use Elmers glue. The leather I use is scrap I picked up from a Tandy's Leather Shop.

Hope this helps.

Oops. What Aliloff said.

Tight - Safe
Loose - Dangerous...at least when I sharpen them.

What the guys said...glue a little piece down inside of the right thickness. You can also try (if you're more adventurous) moistening and wrapping in a rubber strap, but someone with this experience will have to guide you in it. Maybe Dan Koster will come along?

Baddlegg you can take the khukuri out and wet the scabbard down well and then wrap it tightly with a strip of rubber, bungee cord or maybe even an Ace bandage might work, then simply let it dry. I like the leather tip best though but I use Superglue because I feel it's stronger and better equipped to withstand the elements.
And I cut the strip about 1/2" - 5/8" wide and as long as the opening in the scabbard and then glue it on the back side of the throat.
Either way is reversible if the scabbard should tighten back up at a later date. Then you have to tape the edge of the khukuri and then wrap the blade in Saran Wrap, wet the scabbard, insert the khukuri partially and then place a carpenter's wedge down the scabbard and let dry.
Once dry saturate the wood inside with mineral oil or other non-sticky substance like Ballistol and let dry until the oil isn't soppy, helps protect the wood from further moisture.
If you live in a fairly constant humidity once you get it set it shouldn't change much. Wetter/damper weather will cause the scabbard to stretch and dry weather will cause it too shrink, HTH!!!!  :D

here's a suggestion I don't think I've ever seen implemented:

How about shimmying some rare-earth magnets inside the scabbard under the lining? would require some carving into the wood....but with the leather over the magnets...that could make for a heckuva tight keeper. (provided everything was glued back in place well.

My vote is to hold it over a pot of boiling water until the leather starts to become soft, then wrapping it tightly with cord/rope/bands/etc. Set it out in the sun to dry. It will definitely shrink.

Also, a sure-fired way to solve the problem....chop up a bunch of sappy wood...don't clean the blade and just stick it back into the scabbard. That'll do it....:D
