Scadi grinding a Delica?

OK, I've done the math and if you were to reprofile a Delica to have a scandinavian bevel/edge the edge bevel would be a little over 7.3 +/- deg each side, for a total of 14.6 +/-.

I know some may think that's a thick edge. But I have no experance with the scandi style. On a knife with VG-10 is this a good idea for a EDC knife edge, something that would cut cardboard, sode bottles, tape, and so on?

I don't plan on doing this, but it's a fun idea. As well as making the Delica a flat ground knife, bringing the bevel up to the bottem of the wave making it 3.5 deg each side but that's an idea for another time... What a slicer that would be! Almost as good as the Caly Jr. (2.94 per side).

Comments welcome!

I tend to regrind all small sabre knives with full bevels to thin the edge back. For most cutting you would be better with a higher flat or even hollow out the primary, but those are hard to do with benchstones. I typically sharpen at a slightly more obtuse microbevel, however you can run with the primary on soft materials like ropes, cardboard, food, etc. . I have posted up edge retention comparisons between two Delica's ZDP-189/VG-10 with that grind in the reviews forum recently.

Thanks Cliff, that's going to be a bit to chew though.

Not much of a fan of Saber ground knives either, first one I've bought since 01'. But a Waved Delica is to sweet to pass up. I've also found VG-10 to take a great sharp edge.

Reading the thread it looks like the ZDP is a big step-up. Wish I bough that Caly ZDP when I had the chance. It's interesting to hear there is some new thinking about carbides size as you mentioned. Progresss, progress, progress...

Looks like I should bring the angle up abit. Not Scandi, cerainly up. It's going to be the knife that others might get to use. So it still need to be thick 13-15.

I would not get too hung up on the full/sabre issue, there is only a light change in cutting ability, what is more critical is the thickness/angle of the edge. Sabre vs full flat is more for larger knives where you can get weight/balance issues.

Thanks Cliff,

This Delica has become my summer knife this year, just can't seem to put it down.

I've just been doing alot of thinking of how I want this knife to "be" if you get my meaning. I want to see what I can do with knife as a palette. Tweaking the thinkness/angle to edge and edge finish issue is the first thing I'm looking at.

On any knife I hate to see potenional performace wasted. Especially if it were for aesthetics or cost. Which sometimes is the case with saber...

Sabre grinds are generally an aesthetic issue, unless you have to use a specific stock thickness, it is hard to argue for partial grinds as tapers have a better strength/weight ratio, high cutting ability, etc. .
