Yes, still chasing my one best knife, I guess you could say. Well, maybe just chasing....

I've looked at these knives before, but they are out of my price range. Just saw a photo of one posted by Thalestin on another current thread (Absolute Favorite Knife). Wow, what a "looker."

It's my understanding that this is a dog leg (jack?) knife, 3 3/4 closed, single clip blade.

Do you folks know of another manufacturer currently making this pattern/style? I did a search and went to a couple of websites but didn't find anything close to the Scagel Fruitport.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

George

GEC made those Fruitports as a SFO, Bark River did the convex grind, and a leather pouch is included which explains the higher price. GEC has made #48s with slimmer ffg muskrat clip blades if you want one of those. If you want a big clip, well GEC didn't make those as single blade but did in jack form which I highly recommend.

edit #2, one of my favorite and most carried GECs...

edit: There was a smooth bone version but it sold out.

Some single blade GECs

edit #3 You can always make your own using the big clip blade from the jack. Here is a pair I had the blades swapped and rehandled

Thanks Steve and 2Dead,

Wow, 2Dead, what a collection. In the meantime I found the Queen Work Horse Trapper. It's 3 1/2 vs 3 7/8 for the #48. Any thoughts on the Queen?

Are all trappers dog leg knives? Still trying learn about all this "knife stuff?"

Again, thanks for taking the time to comment.

Regards,

George

Thanks George. That's not all of them and GEC is making more #48s very shortly...

As for the Queen, I just placed an order for the jack version yesterday :) Canal Street makes a Half Moon Trapper that is 3 3/4" and 14-4 CrMo steel (Latrobe version of 154CM). Case has their slimline trappers and Queen also has the #11 which is 4 1/8" in D2. edit: And I forgot the Schrades I believe GEC modeled their #48 after like the 194OT

Not all trapppers are dog leg knives, that's what GEC calls their serpentine frame. Strictly speaking a trapper, I believe, is a jack knife with a full length clip and spey blade that pivot at one end with a slight curved frame.

My Sunday knife is a Bulldog serpentine trapper in mother of pearl, also 3-7/8" closed.

The Queen No.11 Utility knife is well worth considering. Comes in woods and bone, with D2 it's longer and better made than the Workhorse series.

CASE Slimline Trapper Barehead is inexpensive and satisfying.

Thanks, Will

Searching online can find you a D2 steel 3.5" Queen Dogleg Jack (2 blade, clip and pen) for ~$50 shipped. Dunno if that would work for ya, I have one and like it alot.

Hi Folks,

Thanks to all of you for your great photos and thoughtful comments. Went to GEC site and as was mentioned in this thread, it looks as though there will soon be some new versions. Think I'm going to wait and see what the new ones will look like.

Again, thanks so much for the help.

Regards,

George

Shh;)

Actually, although the#48 framed knives are nice I think the Fruitport is in a class of its own. The little details make it a really nice knife. Playing the 'if i only kept five knives' game the Fruitport would definitely be one of them.

As these stag ones have only just appeared maybe there will be more bone ones on the way..... Worth saving for IMO

Actually Sam, I believe these have been on the website all along, only we now have pics of both sides with Derrick's newly designed website.

Avoid and Aero,

Thanks so much for your comments.

Actually, KSF was the first place I went and yes, I saw the Fruitport knives. However, I am not yet there when I will spend that much. Yes, the stag looked great and so on, however, too much for me.

I'm hoping that the new run of #48s might have something that I'll like.

Also, just got in a terrific #72 LB, NF clip, green jigged bone.

Again, thanks for your suggestions....

Regards,

George

The bone on this run was awesome. The ivory too. :) Sadly both are all gone.

Here's mine.
