I am building a collection of Scagel type knives. Who are the best established & new makers working in this style?

There are many that do knives styled after the original Scagel designs, but I think the one that stays truest to the original is Dr. James Lucie.

P.J. Tomes, Troy Brown and Jim Behring are others that readily come to mind.

Dr. Lucy gave Troy Brown the patterns from his collection of originals. They are as close to the original as he can get them. Another maker is Noren, and I can't remember what his first name is. He is also a good friend of Dr. Lucy. Lora Sue Bethke is another maker that makes an excellent Scagle style knife. She was taught to make knives by Dr. Lucie.
I have seen some very nice ones at the Blade Show but I can't remember who made them.

Wayne Goddard made a Scagel that Angie Fowler gave to Ed, for an anniversary present I believe. The knife is in Ed's "Knife Talk" book. It's the nicest Scagel I've seen. Ed was kind enough to send me the specs on his knife. I showed them to my buddy Max Burnett, and asked if he could make me one like it. He said he could, I'm just waiting now for him to get to it.

Bill Burke also makes some stunning looking Scagel's.

Two that would come to mind on my list are, P.J. Tomes and Frank Gamble. Just my two cents worth.

Might as well throw Laura Sue Bethke into the fray. She makes some excellent examples along with the other folks mentioned.

Dennis Riley makes some nice looking Scagel-style knives. I haven't had the opportunity to handle any of them, but his work on other traditionlly-styled knives is first-rate.

Tomes is my pick....any pic you see of a Tomes scagel does not give the knife justice until you hold that sweet peice of forged......gah gah gah...

sorry, wrong dream.

Get a Tomes as part of your collection, you will not regret it.

I got one 10" camp knife from Jim Behring. It's very nice. But I'm still looking for one from Dr.Lucie.
