Hello,
last weekend I had some time to get in my workshop.

Actually I'm on three knives, two "Wanderer" with about 95mm blades from german tool steel 1.2442 with a 2% of tungsten, really good in edge retention at 62HRC and another one, my "Jäger" model from 01 steel with a 110mm blade.
The "Wanderer" customer asked for a sambar handle, the "Jäger" customer for a raindeer handle

Here the rough finished Jäger blade

Stamped the blades with my logo

Here the two blades from 1.2442

Fitted guards for the 1.2442 blades

Detailed fitting of the guard (01 blade)

Soldered

Here the soldering of the guard for the 1.2442 blade. The blade is wrapped in wet cloth to prevent overheating, anyway, the solder melts at 230ºC, exactly the annealing temperature.

soldered

cleaned up

glued up

Hopefully this weekend I can finish at least one of them :)

I always wondered about soldered guards, the wet cloth sheds some light on that, thanks for sharing

Arg, that glue-up picture is such a tease!

Thank you guys,
I'm still lightyears away from the artwork you're showing here, but I'm working on it :)
Soldering with the tang up will create this thick solder like behringmade and Randall, soldering blade up is good for a nearly invisible solder.
Flux is acid free and won't mess up the bladefinish.

Love Scagel style knives. Can't wait to see how this turns out. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed

Hello,
yesterday I nearly finished the "Wanderer" from 1.2442 tungsten tool steel, still in need of bladefinish and some guard fine tuning.

Here rough finished without polish

Looks awesome to me!!! Dumb question, but how do you clean up the guard where it meets the blade without scuffing the blade? Im working on my first knife with a guard and have to tackle this here soon.

Hello and thanks for your kind words!
I allways tape the blade because often You'll slip off with the file and ruin the blade finish.
This blade from 1.2442 is at 62 HRC so it's hard to ruin the blade (maybe ruin the file :))
On the last step, I finish the blade with sand paper, the guard taped for protection.

Hello,
now they're nearly done, just some sharpening and the sheaths - ready!

The small "Wanderer" from 1.2442 and sambar, the big "Jäger" from 01 and raindeer

Here with a finer blade finish and some protective patina etch.
