Been ghosting this site for years. Been knife making all that time. Only recently have I been truly interested in Bill Scagel. Fascinated really. So much so that I am actually trying to track down the actual materials he used in his handles...and have tried testing them in mine.

So is there any record of what he actually used. Mostly it says fibrous material for the stack to include gasket material. Reference to bakelite for spacers to cut up bowling balls. English steel to early Studebaker springs. It's all rather vague.

Any input or insight would be much appreciated.

Dr. Jim Lucie was William Scagel’s personal physician. He collected Scagel knives and used his collection to illustrate a rather comprehensive book on Scagel. The book retailed for around $125. There is a copy for sale on Azon for less. He donated a copy to the Spring Lake, MI. public library. When he auctioned off his collection, it realized more than $900,000. Dr. Lucie was also a bladesmith and made Scagel copies which were perhaps a little more refined than the originals because they were labor of love wall hangers rather than utilitarian users.

I enjoy making Scagel type knives. I stated using bakelite poker chips for spacer material and was astonished how well it worked. It polishes very well and has a slight translucent look. It got me wondering about other fibrous material from the era...such as gasket material...etc that might have been used.
