There are some very accurate digital scales available for about $15. I have a few that are great for everything from reloading to mailing to cooking. You can spend much more if you wish. Take a look at Amazon. Even the smallest scales will go to 8 oz.

i have a my weigh mx-300, i've had it for a few years now. it's good up to 300 grams (10.5oz) and it's accurate to 0.1g.

if i were to buy a new scale right now, i would probably go with the my weigh 440Z, it's about $20, good to 440g (0.1g increments). i would also recommend getting a 100g calibration weight (i don't believe the scale comes with it, about $3-$4).

I use a digital postage scale from Office Max. $20 or so. Bought it for shipping, but it goes up to five lbs. Usually, I'll just look up the manufacturers specs on a knife, but it does the job when I need to weigh one (usually for a review.)

My hand.
gradients on scale are:

  • Whopper
  • Better wear jeans
  • Good.
  • small
  • What knife?

I have various digital scales that predate my becoming a knife nut, which happened within the last couple years. I originally bought them to weigh food/dietary supplements, but they certainly do come in handy when I want to see how much one of my knives weighs (mostly customs, for which weights can vary due to choice of handle materials, blade stock thickness, etc.). The one I use for that purpose is a Salter kitchen scale that's accurate to the nearest gram. I got it for about $30 shipped from Amazon, and it's been going strong for 5+ years while being used a dozen or more times per day (to weigh food/supplements , not knives ;) ).

That's the one I use, too. Good for measuring out chemicals as well.

I use a simple food scale from the great Wal-Mart:p. It is not digital, but it is accurate, once I zero it. I would like to get a digital scale though.

I've used different scales, for different applications, and I've found this to be the handiest for weighing knives too. A digital postage scale, from an office supply store is perfect, in my opinion. I don't see any need to weigh knives in increments smaller than 1 gram and prefer the higher capacity. For jewelry, u'd want a scale that measured 1/10 of a gram and it wouldn't usually matter if it maxed out at a few ounces. But for knives, the high capacity and the nice big area to put it on make the postage scale a winner :)

Now, as far as trusting the mfg's spec's. I've found them to be less than accurate.

Go to a tobacco store that sells "head" oriented smoking devices. Any scale they sell is adequate.
