I'm thinking about permanently mounting some micarta factory scales to one of my BK9's via ss hardware and epoxy, then filling in the screw holes with epoxy and smoothing them out to give it a solid handle. Has anyone done this with success ??

Not really sure why you'd want to make it permanent like that.... are the srcrew holes (don't laugh) causing friction or something?

I think it would make a nice looking setup, post some pics if you do it.

I've seen a few Becker handles permanently attached, but have not done it myself.

The screw holes have a tendency to catch your fingers when chopping, so filling them in seems like a good idea if you have no reason to keep them removable.

Happy Friday!

You too!

Yes, pics are a must.

Kk thx I don't really chop with my beckers I use an axe for that...

I filled in the center hole on my Bk9. I did it do to some nerve damage I suffered on my middle finger swinging hand. The tip of my finger would fall into that hole and hurt like hell. PL adhesive solved the problem. Ain't purdy but works. You can pick thru it enough to get the hex wrench in and remove if needed. If you use nylok nuts you won't have to glue the scales down just fill the holes and smooth to your liking.

You're missing out, the last few camp outs I've been on I didn't even bring my axe, the BK20 being such a good chopper. An axe is good if you're processing firewood, but for building shelters and other camp-related wood items I find a big knife is easier to use than an axe.

Yeah probably but I've found that with my carpenters axe and my bk 14 I can work much more efficiently than with my bk 7 and 14.... that might be because my biggest knife is my 7 tho

Tanker 1/66 Tanker 1/66 i too suffered some nerve damage on my little finger and when I'm chopping it hurts like crap... my other knives that don't have the hole there I get the same pain tho.... did it completely alleviate the pain or just a bit? I don't know how long ago it happened but during recovery time my doc put me on frankincense oil to just rub in on the spot for nerve regenerattion helped quite a bit

Tho I have to admit when I'm using an axe it doesn't hurt nearly as bad

It didn't completely eliminate the pain but it helps. I'm thinking about putting thin rubber gasket material under the scales. I have some nice red material. Maybe it will work like a vibration isolator.

I've thought about this before.
Even drilling out some to make it look the same and round on both sides. Maybe some sort of decorative plug etc.
don't think I'd glue them though. Just leave the bolts in and glue only in the holes or whatever

Thanks guys for the opinions, I'll think it over for a few days before I proceed with the project. The reason I need those holes filled are the same as a couple you guy's problems, freaking nerve damage, it really hurts sometimes. Anyway, when and if I do anything I'll be sure to post a few pics.

I fixed the issue I was having with my scales by smoothing those rough edges around the bolt holes with sandpaper, now it doesn't bite me when my fingers get near them.

Ahh, I see... yeah, the factory micarta scales are CNC milled and definitely have some edges here and there that can stand to be knocked down. No two are alike.
Now I sand all my new micarta to about 400 to remove most of the CNC marks and the edges.

I know what you mean, they definitely needed some tlc but I got another pair a few months back and was very surprised at how well they are now . The fit is amazing no need to sand, but if you strip the spine the paint is thick enough that when gone you have to sand them a little . Leave the paint all is good. At first I thought I was just lucky but I'm noticing more with pics from others. They have a different look as well .;)

Every time I think Im going to buy my a set of Big Becker Micarta scales , I end up spending that money and getting another blade instead. I was gonna splurge this month on a set and spent alittle more and got a BK4 instead... Dang !
