I there something you all put on your micarta scales to bring out the color? I remember this beig discussed, but I can't remember the details. Does it last? Is there a bad thing to adding whatever you put on them?

Mineral oil is probably what you're thinking of. No, it doesn't last. And you can always wash it out with soap and water.

Almost any oil can be used, but mineral oil is food safe, doesn't smell and doesn't go rancid.

Not bad for scales.

I have tried some different oil. I put CLP on my TB for pics and it has not lightened since.

On that note, I had my FBMLE fly out of my hand because it had oil on it. I keep them dry for actual use now.

I put WATCO brand teak oil on my hand sculpted magnums. Darkenend them up a good bit (black micarta), which is what I was hoping for. Rubbed it in good with a liberily saturated cotton cloth trying to get it under the scales thinking it may seep under and offer some corrosion protection when it dried. I let it set for about 5 minutes and wiped it off. I let it sit for a couple days and polished it up with a soft cotton cloth, the scales lightened up a little with polishing. I like the way they turned out and they should have a good seal on them also. I would offer you picture proof but I can't figure out how to do that yet.

I actually use snake oil on my snakeskin micarta. The traveling salesman said it would not only bring out the colours but also make my knife sharper, cut deeper and be easier to sharpen!

Naturally I bought 10 vials.

I use mineral oil.sometimes a silicone shoe shine sponge. Gives it nice color, and not to slippery. I keep one just for knife handles.

for the love of peter, do not oil your snake's unless you have at least a few hundred (collecting dosen't count) hour's of use out of them. also paul wouldn't use any WD-40, or liquid wrench on them either.

also i have found that the oil's from a sweaty palm, really bring out the natural color of mircarta. not to mention a marine cloth dosen't hurt.

I have heard that the mineral oil works sometimes. I too am interested in something that will work.

I use Corrosion X on my knives and guns and it does add a bit of color to linen micarta. It is one of the newer synthetic 'bonding' oils.

If you want to add more color Watco danish oil will do it, but it is basically a wood stain. I like it.

I have a Jackhammer comp finish 2008 Special Edition
and a Hellrazor comp finish.
My buddy told me the tend to rust, so keep them oiled,
no problem but I have a bad feeling whats happen under
the handels, so I dicided to make then of and under both
handels heavy R-U-S-T..
I sandblast the blades, blued and rebuild the scales now,
but I'm in bad mood what happens under the scales
of my other 30 BC?
So, watch your knives and oiled your handels complete.
Best,
Andy

It really doesn't matter all that much. Motor oil, mineral oil, light machine oil, silicone grease or even just plain water, if you want a quick idea of how it will look when oiled.
