i bought some s35vn(remember mete & don hanson) from aldo and am havinjg a deuce of a time getting rid of the scale. any suggestions? also do you guys remove the scale at the beginning or towards the end?

soak in vinegar overnight. Also dont use fresh belts on the scale because it will dull them quickly.

Does anyone here use the compound that helps prevent scale?

Would it help when you are normalizing, or do you bother with scale between HT cycles?

can you elaborate on using muriatic acid. how long do you leave it in the solution? full strength? how do you neutralize it? can you keep the stuff and reuse it a number of times?
anything else that i should have thought to ask?

I used vinegar and all of the scale disappeared overnight. it works great. just put it in a ziplock and it will clean right up. alternatly, use an angle grinder with a grinding disk. it just pops it right off.

Hey Manassas,
I used to work at the Argyle vet clinic when I went to UNT. I haven't used your particular steel so you may want to check on that part. I soak it in the acid for about an hour. I neutralize the acid with a baking soda and water solution (I don't have a specific formula, but I use a good amount of soda). After I neutralize I then spray with wd-40 or pb-50 and hit it with a wire brush on an angle grinder. That gets me to bare metal. I got the acid at Home Depot ($10 for 2 gal). I store it in a pvc tube with a cap on the bottom and a screw type lid on top, so far it has held up well and I have used it for 50 knives and its going strong. I hope that helps.

I just spoke to Manassas and I guess I should let anyone else know who needs to. If you can't stand getting the scale and decarb off your CPM steels let us know. We regularly belt grind all that off upon request. If you don't want to spend hours doing it just let us know. We usually will leave it with a 120 or 180 finish.

And it looks great!

Pickling in vinegar or another acid does help a lot, but... if Aldo's willing to do the heavy lifting for you, by all means let him do it!!
