Scales for a BAIII and other questions

Hi guys, it's been a long while since I last posted though I've still been following the new threads when I can. I'm the new guy that was looking for a good wilderness/survival-style Busse a few months back. The consensus was to find a BAIII if possible (thanks again for everyone's great advice) and since then I've been on a quest to find one. Thanks to one of the guys on this forum (you rock!), I finally got one last month and I love it! (pics to come once I get a new digital camera)

Anyway, on to my questions. My first Busse was a sage Active Duty I bought from the Company Store (but I think it was a leftover from the Miliganzaa). Although the blade thickness of the AD and the BAIII seem about the same, the AD's scales are noticeably thicker, and as a result I think the AD feels better in my hand (in fact it feels perfect). It's not that the BAIII feels bad, it's just not perfect. My questions are:

1. In current production terms, are the scales on the sage AD's from the Miliganzaa considered "magnum" scales or are they the normal thickness?

2. I'd love to put new scales on my BAIII that have a similar thickness to the ones on my AD. What's the best way to do this--go through the Busse Custom Shop or something else?

3. If I go through the Custom Shop, how long does it usually take for work like this? The consensus seems to be 2 years for a fully custom knife, but what about getting work done on an existing knife (I'd hate to be without my BAIII for too long)?

4. My BAIII came with the black crinkle coat and I'd love to make it satin or double cut. Is this something that the Custom Shop will do and anyone have an idea of price? Or is there someone else you guys can recommend to do a great job on it? (I've seen threads where people have stripped their own knives, but I think knowing that there's still crinkle coat underneath the scales would bother me, especially if I could still see it peeking out at the edges of the micarta/nucarta(?). I can be be a little OCD)

5. I'm also thinking of having the talon shaved off. Something else the Custom Shop can help with? Do you feel like shaving the talon would throw the balance of the knife totally off?

Thanks guys for any help you can give.

The shop can probably help you with the scales, it just might take a while... (months not years)

I'd strongly suggest you do not shave off the talon hole -- it would greatly diminish the value of your knife, and break many of our hearts...

You'll have to ask garth at the shop about the Satin finish. Sometimes they can, sometimes they cannot. I recently asked about doing a couple of my blades and he said it just depends. But you can call / email the shop and they'll tell you. Even if they cannot do it, stripping and beadblasting that knife would be easy enough to do...

i don't see why they couldn't do the rope texture? it's just something they would have to load up on the cnc machine.

Garth told me they no longer have some of the handle configurations "saved." I was speaking abot a mojo re-handle job though, not a badger...

He did tell me even if they could not re-create the original micarta look, they could do a custom scale job. That's probably what you'd want anyway simpkin.

It really depends if they still have the program file for that particular handle slab and texture. I do know that they no longer have the program for the older MeanStreet handles because I tried getting replacement sets not too long ago.

Just for information.....I am on a 6 month list for some re-coating and slab replacement, wait it's like 5-ish

I wonder if they could just back the slabs up with a black liner that added a few mm to the tickness on each side.

That is a good idea and would probably work really well. They could easily laminate another piece of matching or even different color micarta or G10 right under the original slab to get the desired thickness.

Or you could have Ban do it.

That mod wouldn't mess with the Busse warranty.

Thanks for the input guys. A couple more questions then: 1) If I had someone (Custom Shop, Ban, whomever) try to put in liners, how difficult is it to get the slabs off? 2) And if a non-Busse person does it, how do you get the rivets back on?

The rivets can be easily drilled out with a 1/4" drill bit. Putting them back requires new 1/4 stainless or brass tubing, flaring dies, and a press/vise of some sort.
