After reading Kerry Hamptons' last few pages on fitting stag scales....I am wondering which size most makers buy knowing that they do not necessarily buy for a particular knife size. Say....I rarely make a knife longer than 4"...so I buy either 3.5 or 4". S me have told me they like 4.5 x 1.25 or 1.5. That is a very large scale for a traditional knife unless you are making hunters, BPs, or saddlehorns. Are they buying just in the off chance they may need that large a scale? I have been told by many that 3.5 x 1.25is the most common. Is it really? This may belong in shop talk but this conversation is based on Kerrys' thread below. Please move if inappropriate.

I keep my eye open for good buys, for a fixed blade in stag I would like to have 1.5 x 5" with guards I can go down a bit (0.5 inch) but not much. For folders I need about 1 inch by 3" at a min, this would be with front and back bolster, I would rather have 4" in the drawer to give me some work room, but the bigger the more they cost
