I'm getting a Kershaw Scallion but I'd like some ititials or a name engraved on the scales. I believe the scales are anodized aluminum, so it should be soft and easy to engrave. Not looking for anything fancy here. Just personalization. I would like a fancy'ish font but nothing TOO decorative.

I've heard that I should contact jewelers or trophy makers. Any other comments on this topic? Any cons to doing it? Anywhere else that I should look?

Anyone have this done before?

I used to sell knives in a sporting goods store. For Christmas and birthday presents, the wives would come in and ask what the hubbys had been drolling over. I don't know how many Buck folders and Gerber sheath knives (vintage late 60's, early 70's) went next door to a jewelers for engraving, but it was many. They used to put white paint in the engraving on the Bucks, really sharp for a gift. So much a letter. Any place that does engraving can do it. I suggest plain block lettering as fancy script sometimes becomes very hard to read. If you get FANCY SCRIPT and for example just your initals, be AWARE usually your first name (Sam), middle initial (James), last name (Bauer) will be in this order: S-B-J . I don't know why but the initial for the last name always went in the middle. You might want to clarify it with the engraver BEFORE he does it.

The downside is: once you have the lettering done, you have reduced the value of the knife TO ANYONE BUT YOURSELF, by about 50% immediately. In other words, you had better like that knife before you do it because it is going to be YOURS for a long time.

I took the Scallion to Things Remembered and they engraved a name on it for $15. The turnaround time was 1 hour.

Things remembered is a chain usually located inside shopping malls. They sell lots of wedding type stuff. I think most malls have them.
