Scallion torsion bar weak?

I have a Kershaw Scallion that seems to have a weak torsion bar. I took it apart to make sure that it wasn't broken and it's not.

Has anyone else had a weak bar before? If I push the flipper it only comes out about 1/3 of the way. It has gotten weak over time it seems. It used to snap it out pretty hard.

Can the torsion bars get weak or do they just break?

Just looking for some advice. I will call Kershaw and see if they will send me a new bar.

Upon closer inspection I see a small crack in the bar. So I'll call Kershaw and see if they will send me out a new torsion bar.

I see that this is a common thing, at least on these forums. I don't think that I have even opened the knife 300 times. That doesn't inspire much confidence.

Kershaw should send you a new torsion bar if you ask. Have you tried adjusting the pivot point? I was screwing around with the pivot on my Mini-Cyclone and the AO stopped working right. I never touched the pivot point on any of my other Kershaw AO knives, and I probably never will now that I know better :D It took a few minutes to adjust it back to snappy AO opening again. There seems to be a very fine line between working and not working when adjusting the pivot. Use very small increments when adjusting. If you don't have a Torx driver you can get one at Home Depot for like $6 in the tools section. Just make sure you get the Torx driver and not the small screwdriver set, they look almost identical.

I havent had any problem w/ my chive that i used to EDC. carried it for probably six mths. when you get a new bar it might help to oil the piviot reguraly, if u dont already.

enix,

When I took the knife apart it was still oiled up really nice. It still had grease where the bar was but it had a good amount of oil on each side of the blade. I've not oiled it at all. I've owned it a little over a year and it is carried daily for one thing or another.

CBRacer1,

I tried it even with the pivot screw completely out and it still does it. I don't think it's a pivot thing. :)

While your problem may be a weak/cracked torsion bar, I've had mine for about two months now. It is my EDC. When I first got it, I put a drop of gun oil in there when it was partially open. I bet I sat there and opened it 50 times that evening, just to make sure the oil was distributed evenly.

It still opens hard and fast, faster than my Mini ZDP, so I'd give Kershaw a call and see if you can get a new torsion bar.

Just my .32 pesos......

I have mixed feelings about lubing these knives. Any lube aside from something like dry graphite will attract gunk, creating the need to actually disassemble and clean fairly often, as gunk can make the AO sluggish.

Running my Chive dry seems to be the best bet so far.

I oil mine with hoppes gun oil as well, I've never had any of my knives fail for this reason, however I have blown a couple of my knives out with high pressure air when they looked like they needed it.:D

Called Kershaw and they were super nice. They are sending me out a new torsion bar and a catalog. :)

They said it would be here next week. I talked to Tiffany on the phone. I'm thinking it's the same "Tif" that is on this forum. She was super nice.

Thanks Kershaw!

Have the same problem with my Chive. It is a little knife I love, but I already replaced 3 springs by now :(
The guys at Kershaw were super kind and they sent me a few torsion bars (on their own expense, I should add, although I readily offered to pay for the spare parts and shipping), but the fear of breaking the spring again made me seldom take the little one out of his drawer. :(
Now, I know the knife works just fine even without the AO (in fact, due to the AO I got my belly scratched by the knife who opened accidentally - my bad, I should have put that safety on), but I just love the way it snaps out when you push the flipper. :o
I heard spring breaking is a common issue at the Chive, but seldom happens to the Scallion. I guess the Scallion has a longer torsion bar and withstands more bendings.

Thanks dialex. That's good to know. I do really like the Scallion. Never had a Chive. I have had a Leek and it was great too.

Agreed with dialex...I've read several postings about the torsion bars breaking/cracking/weakening on the Chive...not one complaint about the Scallion...

Got the new torsion bar yesterday in the mail. It fires like new now. :)

Thanks Kershaw, that was fast shipping. The catalog is awesome too!!

Hey there Bungwrench! Yup...you got it right. Same Tif. Glad I could help you out. Let me know if there is anything else...enjoy that catalog!

Tif, thanks. You really got that out to me super fast. I appreciate it. I can't stop looking through the catalog. Thanks again for everything!
