Some time ago I had told a story about the chupacabra that came into my shop and inspired a scaly pattern knife. Running short on time I was unable to come up with a technique to make scale pattern damascus that I was happy with. With a little time to play around some more, I have come up with something that is very close to what I want.
Here are the dies I made.
Here's the damascus with the pattern pressed into it.
Here's the damascus all cleaned up with a quick etch.
Here's another shot, I am going to make a dagger with this piece. I don't want to loose track of where the pattern is in the material so I can keep it centered on the blade. For that reason I'm going to shape this blade with stock removal instead of forging the blade to shape. I think it would be very difficult to keep the pattern centered if I tried to do it in hot steel.
More later. Thanks for looking.
