My GF has her apt contract up on craigslist, (apt located in Utah) and got this kind of strange reply. The apartment isn't owned by my GF, so the check would go to the apartment owner not her, but the person wants help getting her delivered car picked up, being picked up at the airport (1 hour away), and talks about moving across the Atlantic, even though she says she's from Canada. Here's the original message. Sound like a scam or just a different kind of person?

Hello,
Thanks for your reply,Am sorry for the late response, it was due to connection problem, My name is Rosemary Williams (Female),I am 25yrs old, I'm a humble girl down to earth and easy going, matured and very caring.I am a non-smoker,i drink only on occasions. I will be in the state soon for the next one year, and during my stay I am coming for my masters program. My place of birth is Toronto (Canada), my dad is from USA but my mum is from Winnipeg. I went to University of Winnipeg,Canada.
I'm single and never married,a Christian and i attend Church service every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesday's for bible studies.
I am interested in your room as i will be moving in as soon as i can secure the room,i am afraid i will not be available to check the room but i trust my instincts as i am cool headed, just need a nice place to stay temporarily.

You can send me pictures of the place if available. i will be staying for one year but first i will like to secure the room before its too late. I must confess to you that you will enjoy having me around the house because i always try to put on a smiling face and i do my best to make people around me happy.

Please let me know the best time to come as i believe Sundays are always alright for traveling but i would like to hear from you so i know the best time to come down there so you could help pick me up at the airport. Can you also let me know the nearest airport to you? Please try and take the AD off Craigslist finally so as to avoid any inconveniences.

A check drawn from a US bank will be generated by my Dad's home office in the states , it will be a check in excess of the amount for the room. I will like you to send me your information,I'd like to make deposit for the room, you can hold on the place for me.

Full Name
Full Mailing Address
Phone Number

Also as regards my car,i am planning on having it delivered to the house before my arrival so that i can settle in comfortably, you can understand that transiting cross Atlantic is not easy so I'm making arrangement with the car dealer to deliver the car before my arrival after the rent and security deposit has been paid to you by my Dad. I will ask you for a favor here, can i rely on you to take delivery of the car for me when its delivered. As you will be handling the delivery of the car with the rent and deposit to be sent to you so that you can help me handle the delivery payment for the car.The delivery payment will be included with the Check coming to you.I will really appreciate if you can do this for me and promise to compensate you adequately for your time and efforts on my arrival to your place.

Sincerely,
Rosemary.

Classic scam -- there is no reason the check is in excess of what would be asked. Clear give-away. What they do is send you a check and ask you to send back the difference (or in this case, make claim that they are no longer shipping the car - so please send back the extra money). You think all is well and good but find out a week later that their check didn't clear. You're now out the difference. Sounds stupid but it works.

Don't send any personal info and in fact I wouldn't antagonize them -- (so you don't end up on a Nigerian scam list). Just delete and I suspect you'll never hear another word. I've gotten similar messages when selling high dollar items.

Some give-aways on these scams -- they are full of typos, bad grammar and give too many personal details to make them sound so nice and trustworthy.

Classic scam. Why would anyone send a cheque for more than what's asked and their car in advance?

To be really sure you'll need to check with Uncle Alan first though :D

The details are moot. Here is a bit of advice... if you find yourself asking "Is this a scam?" the answer is invariably, "YES!"

sounds like a nice girl to me. always smiling and you get some extras.

Thanks for the replies, looks like she'll have to keep searching for a buyer, but at least she'll be dodging this scam.

Scam.

Run away.

Absolute, complete scam Naive scammers from third world countries always push the 'I'm a Christian' button because in their societies they are told that fear of God makes a person moral.

Every line in that missive radiate scam. For a good time check out some scam baiting sites, some of what is posted can be hilarious.

Yeah, sure ! Pick on an old man...

Try this on for size,smart alec;

Saturday I went to a Gun/knife show. To illustrate my brilliance I Bought a Gregory Crockett beautiful large shiny knife for $95.00 usd. A guy in the parking lot sold me a dagger fot just $5.00 usd.

The tired dagger was made by J.A. LAfquuist in Eskiltuna Swede.
