Hi All,

Just wondering what grit belts/brand you use on the finish of your scandi grind?
Is there a belt available that gives you a sharp enough edge or finish where it just needs to be stropped. I can get the blade super sharp with a Japanese water stone but the finish on the steel is not great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I don't do scandi grinds a lot, but last time I used a trizact belt, followed by a silicon carbide cork belt and a plain cork belt. With light stropping the knife shaved easily.

Cheers Mark. I have ordered some super fine finishing bets up to 1000 grit so see if that helps.

My last scandi was a mirror finish but I did a lot of the work on stones up to 8000 grit. The stones make sure your flat.

Mirror finish looks good but will be destroyed on the first sharpening.

Interestingly, we just had a knock-down drag-out .... debate....about what constitutes as "Scandi" grind. We had a Finnish chap or two who explained that traditionally this grind was formed and regularly maintained on a large diameter wheel (the illustration was larger than 10"). This meant that hand sharpening would only need to remove metal from two narrow bands, at the edge and the shoulder.

I put in another vote for cork belts. Fine cut, even, good finish, can be buffered with green compound so even a 400g has some polish action. Can be used wet.

Thanks guys. I ordered some 3M polishing belts all the way down to 9 or so microns. They get the bevel very sharp with a few passes and leave a decent finish. Gave the edge a strop and it was like a razor. I think the hard part with a scandi is that you want that nice clean bevel line but as soon as you try clean up the edge it can ruin that. Cheers for the advice.
