Who makes them? I got my first Mora and liked how easily it whittled wood. Now I want a Scandi folder.

IIRC the swedish knife company EKA makes inexpensive scandi ground folders. not sure of the quality, never used one, but someone may be able to chime in on that front. for now here's a pic of one version i found.

scandi grind folders are pretty unusual. I've never been aware of a production model, and I've only ever seen 2 purpose built custom ones. both where made by makers over on british blades (although I saw them on bushcraft uk, which seems to be quite closely related) one was a member going by the name of bernie garland, who seems to have dissapeared from bushcraft uk (although I don't know about british blades) and the other was farily recent, but I'm not aware of the maker.

edit: looks like production ones do exist, goatariba posted while I was writing. didn't realise EKA's where scandi grind. looks like I may have to look into them.

I've a EKA Swede 88 and find the blade extremely thin. Much thinner than most Mora blades. Scandi grind and very sharp, but I wouldn't trust it as my only blade in the woods. Just my $0.02 worth.

Also there is this one from WK that i have been eyeing up as a scandi folder. i'd love to hear from someone who has had one though.

I have one of the early serialized ones. I like it in that it's a break from the standard folder style in materials, design and obviously, the grind.

It has a certain feel to it that makes it nordic in my eyes. First of all it's typical puukko size. The curly birch scales and the nonpolished "rustic" finished scandi grind blade give it a nice organic or perhaps a wilderness look to it. Nothing's polished or feel silky smooth in my fingers. I don't like what appears to be just black paint finish on the liners, clip and screws. Looks cheap. And with little use some of the paint is wearing out on mine. Looks like a user fast.

It has a fairly thick linerlock that in my knife locks roughly at the middle of the blade. In this respect it's not following the norm of giving plenty travel for lock wear. What happens to lock I'll have to wait and see. The overall construction appears slightly heavier than what is the norm in that size class folders. This gives it kind of sturdy feel. Surprisingly enough, it's actually not much heavier than other similarly sized folders. It's handle heavy and just feels that way.

I cannot recommend it as a heavy duty folder as Im lacking experience with the knife to feel comfortable on it's abilities to stand for abusive use. Normal whittling and light bushcraft use work great. For me, the ergos are not meant for extended bushcraft chores though. It feels pretty much like the Marttiini folders. Very similar when it comes to ergos. Weight is similar too. You can work with it but it's not like a good fixed blade handle. But this of course is the case with most folders due to construction putting limits to handle shape. One of the things that makes folders bad bushcraft knives in general (poor handle ergos). In my opinion of course.

It's a break from the norm in many ways and I like it as such. And it is a user. But puukko it isn't... ;)

Hope this helps.

The Eka 88 has a very thin blade. About 0.065 in. Im under impression it's 12C27. And it comes with a micro bevel and an extremely low angle grind, at around 9 degrees inclusive. Light cutting chores only! a Very cheap folder with good construction and good materials. Not a heavy duty folder though and definitely not suitable for bushcraft.

I don't know about other Eka models. Didn't the factory go under or something?

I have the Eka Masur which is the same as the Swede, but with a nicer handle. I like it a lot, indeed the blade is thin which makes it a superb slicer, but while really nicely made it's not designed for the heaviest chores. I don't see that as a limitation for the intended general use.
The steel is indeed Sandvik 12C27, which I think works well.

They have several models. I read that some of their knives are currently made in China.
Here is the official site, and if you click left on "News 2009", you'll notice a seriously tempting new EKA 10LK, with a thicker blade than the (lovely!) 88 and Masur.

1. Didn't the factory go under or something?

2. I read that some of their knives are currently made in China.
1. The Co has had some financial difficulties due to the current economic situation. However the immediate threat has been eliminated.

2. That was just an evil rumour created by a swedish journalist (working for Folket newspaper) looking for a scoop.

There are several folding EKA:s featuring scandi grinds:
  • EKA Swede 60
  • EKA Swede 60V
  • EKA Swede 82
  • EKA Swede 88
  • EKA Swede 88V (slip joint)
  • EKA Swede 92
  • EKA Super Swede
  • Normark/EKA Super Swede
  • EKA Kombikniv E8
The steel is the same in all cases: Sandvik 12C27. However the blade of the Normark/EKA knife is hardened slightly softer.

As someone hinted towards it, you could also cosider regounding some of your folders to scandi grind. I bet that would make an awesome backup bushcraft knife!
