How do you get a perfect scandi grind. Ive tried free-hand grinding a few and always screw up from the belly to the tip. Do you makers who do it right use a jig(if so would you be willing to post pics or plans for a good jig), or do some of you free-hand it and it just takes practice. I hollow grind to remove stock and establish an angle then use the platen to flatten the grind, but always take to much off from belly-to-tip and grind past established grind line. Any help is most appreciated.

We recently had a thread about this here. To sum it up, I would say experiment with all the techniques and find what works best for you. I think it would be in your best interest to learn a few ways to do them(freehand, jig, stones, files...) That way, when the wife starts hiding your tools for spending too much time in the shop, you can keep a quik-clamp and a file behind the toilet!.... don't forget to wipe.... the blade down between grits;)

... and wash your hands.

The Fred Rowe bubble jig works great. There is a contest going now to win a free one. It's also an easy way to experiment with slightly differant angles. You will find that D-2 might prefer a more acute angle than CPMS 30-V( just an example) Ther is no perfect angle for all steel types and situations. I only use it to set my angle through the roughing grits. After that the blade will ride the platen smoothly.

Thanks guys for the info. Tried again today, did fine for a while then messed up on the right side near the tip. Managed to clean it up but now the grind goes up about 2/3 the width of the blade. Oh well, more practice I guess:rolleyes:

you slay me... absolutely hilarious.. !!

I've done 3 scandi's completely freehand and although they're a struggle and can be frustrating its also rewarding in its own strange right.. I intend to fashion a jig but I think I will keep freehand practice in the mix as well..
