Scandi Grinding??

Hey Dan,

Being that you are pumping out the Scandi grinds I figured I might be able to get a little shop help from you.

How far can you grind a Scandi pre heat treat? Can you almost go to finished thickness on something like 1095 steel? It seems like there is so much metal right behind the cutting edge that warping wouldn't seem like a factor. Lets say if we compare this to a full flat grind.

I apologize if this is to off topic for your personal forum. if it is please feel free to delete this thread. It is just that I own several of you knives, I am a big fan of your work and I am sure you know a little something about Scandi grinds.

Thanks in advance for your help Dan

Go ahead and go almost all the way to the edge.

Reason = after heat-treat (especially with 1095) there is a slight amount of decarb happening on the outside edge of the steel.

So, after you have heat-treated, you'll need to grind a little more to get rid of that. Following up with 120 and 220 grit belts helps get rid of that too.

I wouldn't take it all the way down...but probably about to 0.020" thick would be alright. I have done hundreds of knives this way.

But, say, should you "overgrind" and hit the edge - no big deal...just take it off afterwards.

Best of luck!

p.s. and I should mention....be sure to use quench plates for straightening 1095 - loves to warp! Even with just a scandi grind. The edge won't warp...but the blade could. I use 2 sheets of aluminum stuck in between a vice...could also just use clamps.

Quench plates?

I heard about those for air hardening steels, but how do you use them for 1095?

Pretty much the same way. After hardening in your oil medium you clamp the blade between the plates to keep warping to a minimum. I think they say somwhere around 400-450 degrees IIRC.
