Scandi Passaround Review #2

Hey everyone. Ive had the scandi for about 4 days now and i am loving it. Today i finally had time to do a review on the knife and let me tell you up front. It preformed VERY well and i trully enjoyed using it. Onto the pics.

In sheath shot. Leather work is excellent. This is my first dangler sheath and i am liking it.

Next I compared it to another well known Scandi for size. This is the Mora Clipper.

Next is a comparison of the spines. Johns scandi is quite a bit thicker.

Next is a in hand shot. The knife is the perfect size IMO for woods bumming and bushcraft. I wear a L/XL size glove.

The knife is the perfect size for choking up on while cleaning game. You can easily cover the tip and used the exposed belly with lots of control.

Next I made a small feather stick. The knife preformed very well and I felt like I had total control over the cut.

Next i compared it to another Scandi I have. This one is a bit more authentic in the Scandi area. I purchased it at the Scandinavian Knife Making Championships in Ludvika, Sweden this past summer. This knife was made by a Sweedish man but there were knifemakers from Finland and Norway there as well.

Another shot of the feather stick. As you can see they are very thin.

Did some batoning on some Redwood.

It preformed very well.

I did quite a bit of batoning with extreme ease.

I then made another feather stick out of Redwood. It took sparks very well and i had flame in no time.

Next it was time to do some finer wood work. He is a spear point.

It was able to make stop cuts very easily and clean.

Here is a trigger stick. Once again the knife excelled in wood working.

Next I did some drilling with the tip. The tip is very sturdy and preformed well while drilling.

I did some more batoning on some pine. I was able to spit the length of the piece with total control.

As i understand one of the reviewers is going to end up with this knife I decided to take a Woodsman Trio shot to show how well it will fit in. ;)

Overall i am VERY inpressed with this knife and also very thankfull John let me be part of this passaround. I hope i did a ok review as this is my first passaround and review. Im going to hang onto the knife for 2 more days and test it a bit more and hopefully meet up with 11x11x so he can see it. If anyone wants to see a particular senario or photo i can take more just let me know. Once again thank you John for the oppurtunity and i hope my review was up to par.

Good review - thanks for sharing the pics and your thoughts. I can't wait to get my hands on this blade to test it out. I like the patina on it, it looks very distinguished :)
 
Man that blade looks great. And so does that oak handle I think that oak is on of the most underrated handle materials. I love how it gets a dirty kind of look, gives it a well used look.:thumbup:

I was lucky enough to have been the first one to get their hands on this great blade before sending it Mike. (Great review buddy).

My experience with John's Scandi was pretty much the same as Mikes, I really do not have anything to add as far as function goes. The knife did everything I asked it too quite well. The size is perfect for belt wear, very light, and like you aren't even carrying it. The dangler sheath is great, I love being able to wear a large coat and have the knife not covered by it.
I personally really liked the handle for this one. It was comfortable and very controlable, I'd compare it's functionality and ease of use to a kitchen paring knife, sharp, light, and controllable. I guess that would make this a woods paring knife :)
I found the edge geometry very handy for sharpening as well. I am by no means the worlds best sharpener, but the nice deep angle of the grind was great for lining up on a stone and keeping the strokes consistent.

The only thing I thought I might change is something I typically don't like in my blades, and that is a ricasso. I will almost always ask for a knife to have no ricasso or a very tiny one. I think this blade would benefit by a really tiny ricasso just to add that little barrier between your finger and that tip on the heel of the blade. In a couple of grips it found myself getting right up on that edge. This is just my opinion based on how I used this knife.

John also has made a pocket Scandi that I am absolutely in love with, if you like this knife check out his forum for the Pocket Scandi!

Overall this is one heck of a great knife. It was a pleasure to use. I only wish my schedule allowed me more time with it. Thanks John!!

That was a nice clean little knife - very pleasant and the sheath was great as well.

I don't think John made any more of them - but he would if he had the orders.

Something tells me he would still have the pattern....

I wonder where that knife is, I believe it was given away at the end of the passaround.
