I have a Granfors Bruks Mini Hatchet on the way (could not resist the temptation) and I'm already thinking about expanding my "Scandinavian Collection." Here's what I want:

1. GB Mini-Hatchet (on the way)
2. GB Hunter's or Forest Axe (have not decided which)
3. Kainuun Puukko or Roselli carbon steel Leuku (Kellam's KP and R lines)
4. Kainuun Puukko or Roselli carbon steel Puuko

I'd like a matched Leuku Puuko set. Assuming you get what you pay for, those I have seen (e.g. Iisakki Järvenpää's--Kellam's J-line) look down-market from the KP line and R line. The $144 Leuku and Puuko set in Kellam's AK-line (AK7D) looks pretty good, though.

I really like the traditional looks of the Scandinavian stuff, as well as what I have read about Leuku and particularly Puuko performance.

The puukko/leuku knives are excellent traditional all-around knives. The puukko design is very versatile. I use mine to do woodcarving, food preparation, making kindling, skinning, and I'm sure there are many others I cannot think of right now. The leuku is a great camp knife for light chopping and larger hunting needs.

The blades are very high carbon and need to be kept clean. However, the benefit is that they hold their edge very well.

Personally, I think that a puukko/leuku is the best combination out there in overall terms of strength, edge-holding, lightness, and versatility.

You'd be hard-pressed to get something better. Just don't buy a knock-off...you'll pay nearly as much, but it won't be as good. Also, avoid the horsehead ones. The market is saturated with them, they aren't very comfortable, and you'll be stuck with something you don't like, and can't get rid of.

You could, of course, always just make one of your own...;)

You can get a kit to make one for about $25 per knife.

Just an idea...

No knock-offs or horse heads for me. I'll wither get a Kainuun, a Roselli or Kellam's AK line (unless I make a set). If I go with Roselli ($$$) I could get the UHC Puukko/Carpenter's Knife.

I have thought about making a set. Specifically, I have thought about buying the traditional blades and fitting G10 handles.

Check out www.hankala.com - prices more reasonable and Jukka got a lot of international prizes on knife exebitions. Also I bought from Rosselly directly - called them and ordered Hunter blade by phone. Roselly even making wootz knives.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks, Vassili :) I planned to explore buying direct from the manufacturers before I buy anything from a US distributor. I've gotten some good deals buying internationally over the years. Those hankalas are nice.
